mistletoe makes an excellent point about synonyms; different people from different places will have different vocabulary sets.  For example, "savage" will mean "cool, great" to an Irish person and "wild, uncivilised" to a North American.  Be careful which words you learn and use!

As for improving listening, it's critical to find someone to speak English to who does NOT have a Chinese accent, that way you will get used to proper pronunciation faster.  For instance, when I speak English to Chinese people, I often find they understand me better if I adopt a fake Chinese accent, because they're so used to hearing the English words with an accent!  The easiest way to avoid that problem if you don't have any native English speakers as friends is to watch English-language films and TV shows.  It's also more interesting than listening to recorded lessons!
