1st Toastmasters Speech

Hot 1794 views. 2013-6-22 18:59 | everyone, teachers, memory, middle, school

Okay everyone close your eyes. And think about the time when you were in middle school, and recall how many times your teachers made you stand in the corners or copy texts from the textbook as a punishment. Alright. I do not want to drag all of your sad memory or else many of you will come and cry.

Today I would like to share my experience about being a post 90s in an international school. I am now thirteen, and I go to an international boarding school located in Songjiang District. Just like everyone I study in this wonderful city and breathe the same kind of air. NowI know that not many people have attended an international school, and I also know that there are a lot of people judging teenagers my age. Saying that we are overly influenced by the dark side of our society, and we are way too mature. Indeed, I cannot deny that our world today is filled with things people my age should not have access to. But along with I pads and smart phones, it’s kind of hard to avoid these influences.

But I am an international student. I get to speak our loud my ideas, so the side effects won't just grow deep inside of me. It get transformed into topics we discuss and analysis. Being in an international school means that your thoughts are not restrained. You can and are often welcomed to question the teachers, you can always criticize the textbooks or giving positive advices. I remember last year when I was still in Year 7, our school food was terrible, and we had to pay about 60 RMB each day for our meals. So we wrote a bilingual letter to our principle and told him about our concerns, and we collected everyone’s signature from our grade. Next year, the previous food company was fired and we got a new serving company. And by the way, the previous company was Sedexo, Yuk.

Also, we have a lot more team spirit and you get this kind of belonging. Remember when you guys were still in middle school, P.E. classes basically contains running laps around the field, basketball, sit ups and jumps. Oh, and don’t forget our 第二套广播体操. However, in an international school, we do real sports. We have hockey, soccer, basketball, rowing, volleyball, track and field, swimming, dance, ultimate Frisbee, tennis, bad Minton, etc. By doing these, we do not only exercise physically, we also learn about strategies but mostly teamwork. Learning how to cooperate and to share experiences. I guess you can say that in our school we learn a lot from each other. Well, that is what real teaching should be like.

And that leads me to my next point. International schools believe in broadening our horizons, not by solving more math problems on paper, but giving out solutions to social issues and attending various kinds of activities. After finishing primary school, I went to the well-known middle school, WFLMS. It said that English was its priority and trains us to become international citizens. Well, of course, turns out it wasn’t true, since all we do is copy things like: Where is John? He is in the bathroom. And we also do diertaoguangboticao every single P.E. class, and our P.E. teacher was often frustrated at us for not doing the moves straight and ordered like robots. So in 7th grade I went to YKPS. It was a smart choice, since it was no use staying at that school. My ability is not going to improve by doing math problems over and over again. Plus, I’m not a math genius anyway. After going to YKPS, my English ability had really started to grow. I mean I was really good at oral English, I attend different kinds of English competitions and I can always get first pr second places. Maybe be that is why I am always confident about it. However, my writing and grammar was like hell. I remember the first essay I wrote in the beginning of year 7. It was only a few hundred words but when I got it back, I was shocked. On the page there were 35 red marks, they were all spelling or grammar mistakes. By practicing every week, my problems were solved. Mistakes decreased, and my real English ability developed. We also do presentations and read out loud our essays in front of everyone. Often our essays are about social concerns and global events. We always have discussions after and record contributing thoughts.

Excitement always overwhelms anticipation. Days do not repeat by themselves, we build our very own tomorrows. Now close your eyes again, and imagine what schools will be like in the future. Thank you for your attention.

You are fortunate to be able to attend an International school. Indeed, students from international schools are more presentable and matured in thoughts. Your mastery of English is a valuable asset as there is a great demand for young people who are proficient in English.

The one I attended is also an international school, but they did not teach Chinese and this has caused a lot of problems for me as it is hard to work without knowledge of written Chinese.

Thanks for sharing your experience with us here.
