DaMa大妈! We all love you but please don’t make us embarrassed

Hot 21193 views. 2015-8-25 21:42 | especially, convenient, Because, dancing, popular

Square dancing is one of the most popular daily activities in China, especially for those retirees. Among the most of square dancers are female and have been given a popular name of Dama. They dance every early morning and night in a public place where is convenient for them. Usually a loudspeaker is used for this typical dance and a large public area is blocked. Because the population is high in China so those Dama’s behaviours have been tolerated by Chinese people. The local residents seem to get used to the fact that square dancing happened in their living areas. Nowadays, I believe that it has become a part of Chinese culture.

In recent years, square dancing has been emerged as many immigrants of Dama arrived in oversees. However the local residents are becoming aware of the impact of square dancing. Some of them even felt very frustrated and made complaints to their local Government. For example, couple years ago, a group of senior Chinese ladies dancing in New York's Sunset Park were confronted by local police over noise complaints from nearby residents. Also a news about a group of Chinese Dama doing a square dance abroad has also sparked a heated online debate. I also spotted a group of Dama danced in front of a shopping mall large walkway and at a local basketball court. I felt very uncomfortable at the time. I thought there are a lot of parklands around this area, please go there. My dear Dama, we all love you but please don’t make us embarrassed.

Public square dancing is also popular in my city. We also call that Grannies (Da Ma) dancing. Every evening after dinner, those ladies come out and dance to the lively music. This is healthy activities and should be tolerated by the public. However, the loud sound of music could be offensive to other people and they should not disturb people spending their evenings in peace. It would be great if they could dance in a distance away from people's homes and ensure that there is no disturbance. Every evening a group of pretty Korean and Japanese dance in the open area nearby. I don't really mind that but if it is repeated everyday, then it could be a problem. Anyway, everyone has his/her own liberties to do the things they like, and yes we all love you, so just be considerate.

It really make people dumb when Da Ma's square dancing cause distress to others. Wish the situation can be solved soon.

Haha, I almost forget this article because it was written a year age. As you said, I do hope Da Ma can adapt to the new environment and be more aware of the impact from their outdoor activities. Thank you for your comment
