Square dancing is one of the most popular daily activities in China, especially for those retirees. Among the most of square dancers are female and have been given a popular name of Dama. They dance every early morning and night in a public place where is convenient for them. Usually a loudspeaker is used for this typical dance and a large public area is blocked. Because the population is high in China so those Dama’s behaviours have been tolerated by Chinese people. The local residents seem to get used to the fact that square dancing happened in their living areas. Nowadays, I believe that it has become a part of Chinese culture.
In recent years, square dancing has been emerged as many immigrants of Dama arrived in oversees. However the local residents are becoming aware of the impact of square dancing. Some of them even felt very frustrated and made complaints to their local Government. For example, couple years ago, a group of senior Chinese ladies dancing in New York's Sunset Park were confronted by local police over noise complaints from nearby residents. Also a news about a group of Chinese Dama doing a square dance abroad has also sparked a heated online debate. I also spotted a group of Dama danced in front of a shopping mall large walkway and at a local basketball court. I felt very uncomfortable at the time. I thought there are a lot of parklands around this area, please go there. My dear Dama, we all love you but please don’t make us embarrassed.
