After Written Translation Test...

Hot 151456 views. 2016-5-24 20:23 | Style, Style, Style

Last Sunday, I took part in Written Translation Test of CATTI whose full name is China Accreditation Test for Translators and Interpreters. Frankly speaking, it's not an easy test. Two months ago, I signed my name on the test and considered it as a challenge on the road of my learning English.

Like most of Chinese students, I began to learn English after stepping into middle school. On that time, I regarded English as a subject to achieve academic goals. Gradually, I started to realize that the meaning of mastering different languages is not just limited to realistic benefits when I came back from one-month academic summer camp in Britain. You never know how nervous I am when I walked on the street of an alien country the first day. While wondering around, I even doubted if it was just a dream. I still remember when ordering in a local restaurant, I stared at the menu tightly and forgot to answer waitress's question "any ice in coke?" Funny and awkward things happened throughout the unforgettable days which had altered my perspectives to English learning. Through communications with local students and visits to various of Britain's typical natural and cultural resources, my knowledge towards English as well as British culture entered a new stage. Meanwhile, each conversation also made it possible for me to deliver updated information about China to foreigner friends and I was really delighted to read from their faces their surprise and excitement to the great changes in every aspect of China. From then on, I came to a conclusion that learning another language not only provides you the opportunity to get close to another culture and what other people are thinking about outside your land, but also offers you an international stage on which you can play as a representative of the culture you are living on.

I hope I will be able to make substantial contributions to the culture exchange in my spare time some day. To be qualified as a translator is the first step of the scheme.

First, thanks for your blessing:D
I think it's a good choice to take exams like that. Regardless of the result, the process of preparing can see your improvements. If you have interests on CATTI, I advise you know about more details on their official website. It's a professional translation test hold by ministry of personnel.

According to what you have written here, your English standard is above average. This alone is a valuable knowledge for you in future. Obtaining recognized professional translation qualifications would be an obvious next step for you. Should you be able to pass and gain your recognition, you would possess a truly valuable qualification and there would be lots of career opportunities available to you. However, as you probably know, this accreditation examination is quite tough and would require a substantial effort. Expertise in translation is not achieved by hard studying or mental effort. A lot of reading would be required and it takes quite a bit of time.

Your visit to Britain should be have the effect of giving you confidence as it appears you do not have much problem with communicating with the locals over there in UK. You have done the right thing by introducing your own country, culture and life in China to them as this is a good topic for discussion. I am also interested in this topic despite the fact that I am a Briton born in China.

You do not have to be too concerned about the result of the exam as it is difficult to predict the result. Try to study past questions if available or find suitable reference material. All in all, I feel you have sufficient strength to go through this exam. Face it with confidence. You have our support.

Many thanks for your support.
Like what you referred, translation is a huge project requiring
knowledge accumulation, professional skills and acute reactions. I realized that I still have a long way to go if I want to have something of my own in this field after the exam. To bring in brilliant ideas and introduce Chinese excellent gains on the academic field I am studying on to overseas is one of my career goals. I'll try my best to make the dream come true.

The test has three levels in Written translation and Oral translation. Level 1 is the highest and also the toughest. But I think the oral translation has something different with spoken English. If you'd like to take the oral translation, gasping the skills of translating a piece of original material in a limited time is the basic. So, in my eyes, practicing with the official recommended books and extra materials regarding the test you can reach from other channels are enough and you don't need to prepare it with the help of others. Certainly, strong oral ability in either Chinese or English should be put as the base before your prepare for the oral translation test.

That exam is surely not that easy. By reading your words, I sense you do have found the direction of English learning. You can learn and improve English well. I just think so.

English is not just for passing some certificates. More than that, we are to master it for communication to know better outside the world. You are qualified to be an errand in the contribution of culture propaganda.

If you really want it, you can take it.

Thanks for your encouragement. I agree with u. There are much more things awaiting my plans, not only language, if I want to do the culture exchange. Language is the bridge and qualification is the kick-brick.
