Why follow trends, do what you love

Nowadays there are increasing numbers of people trying immigrating to overseas, I know quite a few friends closing their businesses or quitting their prestige jobs in China by running a very small grocery shop kind of business in order to get permanent residency in Australia. There’s nothing wrong, they might sick of high stressful jobs or escaping from an air-polluted home country pursing a better life in Australia.

It is not the fact at all, in some successful cases, lots of them once got PR, their businesses in Australia were immediately sold out and they moved back to China. The worst examples, after a couple of years,  some people running away from Australia by losing money as they really hate living overseas, with no family around, can’t communicate properly in English language. Eg, I heard a story from my friend, one lady bought a coffee shop, however, she didn’t know how to make coffee, therefore, and she used to be fooled by employees for not attending work without increasing the wages.  In the end she had to return back to China by shutting down the business as that was too stressful for her to handle. By the way, in Australia, there would be huge difficulties to be a boss without understanding the law; it is too easy for an employee to put his or her manager into court.

That’s what I’ve heard: We came to Australia as the agent told us how fresh the air is, how good social security and  education system in Australia, no, we should not listen to them at all, they only care about money.

I remember 13 years ago, MBA was so popular in Shanghai, it seemed everybody was gonna have a MBA degree including me as I was so hesitated whether enrolled a course or not, and I did actually had a diploma of Business and tried very hard eventually won the scholarship from Latrobe Uni. But when I studied overseas, I realized how wasteful it was, nobody was really interested in learning MBA unless you were working at a position of management. I was very regret. I should have studied accounting as I am good at numbers rather than words. I was so stupid by following trends without thinking which suits me most because  I couldn’t get much suggestions, the miss-leading advertising was overwhelming, it’s easily to be lost if you don’t know what you really want.

I also wasted time on certificates without thinking about why I should have them, in my opinion, the more certificates the better. It was because everyone else was doing. I got computer certificate I, that’s ok for the basic stuff. But again, certificate II, which was very hard to learn, I had no idea what it was talking about at all. Although luckily I got certificate out of 30% passing rate, even one computer lady in my company failed. But it was useless, I was quite unhappy as I didn’t get a better position which was related to computer as the lady had some relation with the manager. But now I realized that I am not that type of person for computer as it is too boring for me, but why I studied then, there’s no meaning.

I always think it’s quite easy for Chinese people doing business as long as they know what will start getting popular at first place.  A few years ago, almost all girls in shanghai were having an UGG shoes made in Australia or whichever country. If you were in China, you must think all Aussies were wearing that kind of shoes, Actually, I could hardly see anyone wear it on the street of Melbourne, why don’t buy a pair of good quality leather boots instead.

The year my niece was born, when I went back on holiday, my luggage was very heavy as it was full of 12 cans of Australian Brand formula milk for little kids. When I arrived at Shanghai, I was told: “Sorry, the kid only drink one particular kind brand Australian-made milk, everyone’s having that brand in shanghai.” My Goodness, I have never seen that brand in Australia. The brand was only advertised by Chinese businessmen, which was sold at a very high price only available in China. What’s wrong with these people, why they ignore the real one by having a fake one nobody knows in Australia. How bad influence the advertising starts from Children.

I feel there’s one uniformed lifestyle in Shanghai or China, but as a person, do we need some individualism for our particular needs? Probably some people has no time to think about what really love is, therefore, he or she accepts everything which is the most popular.

OMG, you must have typed this on a cellphone and transferred it here without checking.    No paragraphs and full of garbled words. You must be very busy. Anyway, it is still ok.

Thanks for writing this informative and useful blog which all those who believe that emigrating to other countries is like hell to heaven. All those who are dreaming of emigrating to other countries should read this and think carefully before overturning your life and moving overseas. Emigrating may from China to other countries may be advisable some years ago when China was struggling to develop, but nowadays things have changed.

A new immigrant in a western country is likely to hold an ordinary job. Perhaps the salary may be more but the expenses are high and nothing much would be left after the rent and food. Homesickness and language problems could drive a person crazy. In the end, most immigrants would reverse their dreams and wish to return home to China. Some immigrants are successful but not many. Look before you leap.

My greatest regret in life was to obtain a United States of America Green Card which is sought after by so many people. It turned out to be a nightmare for me. I am already a UK Citizen and don't really need to live in the US, but I was driven by all those publicity about the good life in the US. When I arrived in the US I was shocked that it was not like what I expected. Everything is monopolized by the rich and it is so difficult to start your own business there. The streets of New York, Miami and Los Angeles were full of drug addicts,  dirty homeless people with stiff dirty caked stiff hair and going out at night is not safe except in the affluent areas. Harlem in New York really shocked me. I don't want to say too bad about the US but I could not stay there for more than a day.

Well, then I decided to quickly give up my US Green Card and forget USA but to my horror, I discovered that getting the Green Card was easy but giving it up or cancelling it was very difficult. They just assume every one is escaping USA for tax. If you want to lose the US, you have to pay 45% tax for everything you own anywhere in the world including your home in China, all your investments, savings in the bank and everything valuable would lose 45% to the US. In addition there would be huge fines of 50% if you did not report your assets before, so anyone giving up USA would end up losing everything and become poor. The only choice you have is to remain a US resident even when you hate it. There are millions of people around the world caught in this vicious web or extortion and tax slavery. If you have money or assets, whatever dreams you have, never become a US resident.

if I cancel and return the Green Card, USA will immediately see how much money and property I have, then they will ask me pay 45%. That means I have to give half everything I own to USA. You think I will be so crazy to give away my life savings like that? The only thing I can do now is keep the green card and never travel to the USA again. Even if I die, they will still take 45% from me. What kind of country this is? Hate the USA.

thanks, Sunnyv:

You make me laugh in some way as you have British Citizenship, what’s the point for you apply US PR, you must live in HongKong for so long and influenced by the media and your friends, especially you understand Cantonese, that’s the problem I guess, haha, just joking.

Obviously, the rule in US is more strict than Australia, but in Australia, if you have  a PR, you have to live in this country for 2 out of 5 years, otherwise, visa can’t be continued unless you have an immediate family member who meets the request( even not including own children), however, if you can’t meet 2 out of 5 years, you have to renew visa every year online by paying more than AUD350 , even tourist visa can be renew for 3 or 5 years once .

If you are  rich, then you can’t get any benefit from the government, they don’t pay you pension, you will buy medibank private insurance as medicare(free by government) doesn’t cover everything. Poor people can get benefit definitely , but government doesn’t accept them unless you are a refugee.
That’s what I mean don’t listen to other people’s opinion, if you really enjoy living overseas , then go for it.

However, most of my Chinese friends who speak very good English  after completed Bachelors’ degree in Australia and having a job in a Foreigner run company are enjoy the life as much as they can.

But if someone who don’t understand English much, that would be very hard  to develop as they hang around with all the Chinese, it’s just like live in China, therefore, there are people who only speak very little English though they have been in Australia for more than 10  years as they live in a small Chinese community.

The reason for those business immigrants shut down the business after having PR, as one friend told me: “ I’d better find a job in an office as it owns more than running a small business like grocery shop.” By the way, the minimum wage in Australia is pretty high , minimum permanent rate: AUD 17.29 / hour plus 4 weeks’ annual leave and public holidays, minimum casual rate AUD21.61(no other benefit include). Therefore, in Australia, finding a job in a proper company guarantees you a good living standard. The main thing is it’s not that easy to find the first job without local experience in recent years .

As I reply to sunnyv above, it’s not absolutely bad or good.

It is only you have prepared enough to handle all sort of difficulties, then you can go for it. please never expect there’s a perfect world waiting for you, which can change your life completely. NO, then you will be very disappointed.

It is an unknown world full of adventure, sadness, hardship, happiness, excitement etc, you will experience all sorts of different feelings.

If you are interested in , I have already written a few blogs before regarding my overseas life—“my wonderful  uni life in Australia”. I will write more later on.

HI, Yvonneand mandy

I appreciate your reading my article, I will be much happier if  you’ve got some useful information from what I posted. Hehe, don’t be tricked by advertisement regarding children’s product, sometimes you don’t have to live in a fancy world, as long as you do things which make your kid happy, that’s the main point.

Nice of you to give us the insight for life in Australia. Some of those things, I didn't know. I always heard that Australia is a welfare state and there are lot of benefits. Starting small businesses there also seems to be not that easy, but still, the world trend is entrepreneurship and salaried jobs are getting fewer.

You know, living here in Hong Kong has lots of benefits and also some disadvantages too. I never had any problems with free education, living, free medical, jobs and business opportunities, as this is a totally progressive and free city.

My situation is similar with other Chinese residents here and the only difference or advantage is I am conversant in English making it easier for me to hit it in international business. Getting a job and having good savings is not difficult. When a person is jobless, he can get unemployment subsidy. Those over 65 can receive about US$500 per month if you don't have much assets. Free housing too.

However, in any country, you won't make anything unless you try hard from the bottom of the ladder up. I saw those opportunities and grasped it at the right moment and went up from there. The longest journey starts from the first step and I willingly took that first step.

It does appear that I am asking for trouble by getting US Green Card when I am already a British and EU citizen. The thing is that I was born in China and there are some grey area as to where I belong. HK as a British territory ended in 1997 and my parents believed that a foreigner would face an uncertain future, therefore, I applied for a Green Card. What a regret that was.

Well, that is all for now and.. back to work.

Haha, speaking of law, my boss has become a lawyer after got a law degree because there were too many employees put him into court.

It is too hard to run a business in Australia without the knowledge of law. That’s why those new business immigrants can never run a proper business .
If they don’t want lose money, the best way is shut down the business after get PR.
