“I am a simple person; I only focus on work rather than personal relationship.” That’s what I told our accountant.
“Sweetolive, you misread my message and misunderstanding my point, what I meant was, if you give someone a task or a job to do, you should leave it to that person’s hand and trust him. You must not give a job to someone, then jump over his head and ask another person, that is very rude.”
I will be so mean if I do things like that, but he’s not that kind of man I can trust with.
After I requested the Singapore man to solve the problem of a purchase order three times and I told him it was urgent, without that PO, I couldn’t do supplier reconciliation and make payment on time.
What I’ve heard from him: “Ok, I will do it, trust me, I will do it”, but he has never taken action.
I will believe his words if it is the first time, but now, I regard him talking rubbish.
When I just started working in the company, I did appreciate and respect him. The bank account was blocked after I entered the wrong password, the gentleman printed out the statement for me every day, and I regarded him as a kind person who can be friend with.
The first week, he asked my mobile number and texted me: “Sweetolive, if you have any problem, I will help you, please don’t let others know especially two Aussie girls who enjoy reporting new employees. Two Accountants have left because of them.”
“Thanks very much for reminding me, but I don't like texting and involving in the complicated relationship. All I want is to do a good job and go home, earn money to pay bills.” That’s what I told him.
Now I feel happy as I didn’t listen to him. Otherwise, I will leave a bad impression to the boss- a new staff is always texting at working hours.
To start with, I trusted him so much; I didn’t ask anyone else for help except him, what he told me: “Just leave there, I will do it, I’m writing a report for the boss.”
I believed him and left my work behind for a couple of weeks, then so many things were getting stuck. I was deeply stressed and blamed myself: “How can I be so stupid, can never work fast.”
And the boss asked me: “Have you done the bank reconciliation, have we received money from the clients?” “Sorry, I am doing it.”
I was worried as I couldn’t finish reconciling on time, that would influence another department to decide whether to start a project for the clients or not.
Again, I asked him: “Could you please follow up bank recon when you are free?” “Sure, Sweetolive, I will do it, I will do it very soon.”
I still trusted him; I thought he was very busy in doing some important things.
After a few weeks, our company paid $100/hour for a consultant- an Aussie lady to help us.
One day, she sat beside me and watched how I could not do a job fast.
Then she found the issue because the company was pretty disorganized, the management of accounting was a mess, then nothing could move forward.
I am new and doing the last step of bank reconciling; all the problems will come to me if anyone makes a mistake, that’s how my job was getting extremely difficult. I felt stuck, stuck and stuck…
A lot of problems were caused by that accountant, he didn’t do a proper job, and I couldn’t blame him because he had no idea how to do it.
However, I have difficulty in understanding if he does not know how to do things, why not ask help instead of showing me he knows everything.
Since the Aussie lady gave me a hand, I feel relieved as she’s taking responsibility and solve the problems straight away.
Gradually, I am losing the trust of that man and try not to ask him as I know the quick answer: “I will do it, I will do it.” and put my questions behind forever.
Therefore, I decided to ask the lady help for the Purchase Order I requested the man to do 3 times with no answer.
That afternoon, when the lady questioned about the PO, the man said: “I didn’t know anything about it, I haven’t had a look at it.”
To my surprise, the following day, I received a text message at 7:06 early in the morning.
“Sweetolive, I have always helped you since you worked in the company, I have said nice words to the boss about your work, but you gave that invoice to the Aussie lady, you know that PO is related to my work and another Aussie lady who had just taken 2 weeks’ off for complaining manager not doing a good job, I feel upset.”
You see, how terrible the man, he tried to hide the issue and blamed me privately rather than taking action to solve the problem.
He is a CPA, what is his work ethic? No wonder nobody listens to him in the company, he’s trying to get close with a new staff like me to hide things when he requests.
Unfortunately, man, I am not that kind of person, all I want is doing a good job for the company and make myself happy.
He texted me again:“I know you try to do a good job, I was planning to get the invoice done for you. If the boss asks why you didn’t pay or reconcile the statement, tell them I have the invoice, and I will deal with them.”
“Ok, I help you this time”, I told him: “I will take the invoice back from the lady and let you do it.”
In the morning, I gave the invoice to the man and he said: “Sorry, the boss is not here today, I will do it when he’s back on Monday.”
“Ok, not a problem, I can wait.”
Monday, he didn't do anything about it; Tuesday, I asked again: “Have you done the PO for the invoice.” “I will do it at lunchtime.” In the afternoon, he said: “I promise you will do it tomorrow.”
One day passed, two days passed; so far the problem is still there.
That could be understood if he is extremely busy in working, to be very disappointing, most of the time, he’s texting.
A week ago, the date of my contract was due; the man talked with the boss, the door was closed.
In the afternoon, I was told: “Sweetolive, you are a good worker, and your English is excellent!!! But you have a little bit problems in communication, so we will extend your contract for another 4 to 6 weeks, probably not a permanent position.”
“That’s ok, thanks very much, I do appreciate work here as I’ve learnt a lot of new skills.”
I used to regard that accountant as a really nice man who tried his best to help me out; especially he bought a cup of Herbal candy when I got coughing.
He seems very kind to Aussie girls in front of them, indeed, from his texting, he hates them so much.
And I found two Aussies girls are not as what he told me, they are very responsible for the work, at least, if I ask the girls to do something, they will put it on the priority list and do it very fast.
No one knows what the man said to the boss regarding me, from my instinct, I don’t think he will be happy with me.
Who cares about a permanent position, that night I bought an aeroplane ticket to China, I will be a long holiday again from mid-Dec to the end of Feb. Probably, that’s my perfect lifestyle, work 7 to 8 months a year and travel a couple of months.
I work for happy and fun not for caring someone who is mean and stab in the back.
I will ask the lady help if he can’t do the PO tomorrow, I am responsible for the supplier and the company, and it’s my value.
