Mum can still be classy

I am not a big fan of luxury thing and don’t admire anyone who carries an LV bag, drives a Mercedes-Benz or wears Tiffany Jewelry.
With self-confidence, in Melbourne, sometimes I wear clothes which were bought 10 years ago.
What a coincidence!Yesterday early in the morning, when I entered the office, an Aussie girl said: “Wow, you look stylish!!!”
“Nice to hear, but the top has been wearing since I was at the Uni.”
“Look at your high-heel shoes!!!” “Well, it was bought on Collins Street years ago.”
I realized the good quality shoes count no matter how old clothes wearing, you could still be fashionable.
In China, I loved a Japanese designer brand tops, shirts, cardigans, coats and pants, the one fits me the most which was only available at ISETAN in Shanghai.
I was fascinated by the brand, so I bought the bag in the shop, but I can’t make a compliment to the accessories.
One day after work, I tried to open the door, but couldn’t find the key, so I searched the bag thoroughly and discovered a big hole inside, my missing key must hide somewhere. Finally, it took me 20 minutes’ to figure out.
Since then, I always got stuff missing in the bag.
One year, I was looking forward to buying a bag but had difficulty to find a suitable one in China.
At Chinese New Year’s day, I caught up with one relative, she carried a bag.
“Gucci!!! That looks nice…” “Yeah, you know the price, only 380CNY (AUD70)” “That's very cheap, could you please bring me one?”
I have never thought about to buy a fake one, but I went to most of the department stores, didn’t find one loved, so that was an exception.
In Melbourne, I was content with the bag, you see, good value for money, why buy an expensive one, absolutely not worth it.
After six months, I took a train to the company, when it drove close, at that moment, the handbag strap was broken which was nearly falling onto the train track.
I was terrifying, if it happened, I would lose mobile, wallet, keys, bank cards and ID card.
What the hell, I will never buy a crap handbag!!!!
Christmas shopping at Chadstone, husband suggested that I should buy a good quality one, I was falling in love with Salvatore Ferragamo, which is made in Italy, the calf leather.My husband insisted on paying the bag.
That’s the first luxury thing I had; I used to spend money on education, now I need a change.
Since then I don’t need to worry about bag broken thing and walk around the street to find a cheap, durable one which is time-consuming.
The bag has accompanied me for six years; it is big enough to put a lunch box.
Now I changed stereotype about a luxury thing; it is a symbol of good quality life rather than showing off how rich you are.
I was inspired and decided that I should spoil myself, buy one luxury thing each year.
Then I bought one more bag and a wallet the same brand; it’s amazing the wallet still looks brand new though has been used for years.
Again a Dior belt, a Max Mara coat, until last Sunday I bought a Burberry trench coat.
In Australia, as long as you have a full-time job, for the average, a few weeks’ salary, one can afford to buy a luxury thing.
It depends on where you spend money, someone buys drinks, coffee, cigarettes, take-away, cars or pay for travelling, gym, dance etc. It is the personal choice.
I buy high-quality stuff to make myself feel good as I set up a goal when I turn to old, I still look attractive and enjoy life as much as I can.
I just figured out a Burberry coat is the extra 30 minutes’ work per day I did, so that’s the reward for my hard work, I don’t feel guilty about it.
In Australia, the average working mom like me can afford to buy a Dior bag each year, in China, probably only rich mom has that luck.
And probably, it is more related to the tradition. In China, moms think they have already turned to 40 or 50, why buy it, what a waste!!!
They spend money on their children and grandchildren. I read one article regarding a Chinese mom, a cleaner, who held a dream sending her daughter study in Australia.
The poor mom and dad saved every penny without buying one new clothes for many years, how generous they are to the daughter!!!!
I have a primary school classmate in Shanghai, she’s a public servant who earns good money each year.
She has two three-bedroom apartments in very good location, but I doubt she will buy herself a pair of shoes made in Italy.
She concerns about how to save money for her son to find a future wife and then pay for her future grandchildren to a private school.
Obviously, she’s a typical good mum type in China, I might be a bad mum.
As compared to my friend, I am a bit selfish, my daughter in her 20s hasn’t had one luxury thing. Instead, I spend money on myself.
Maybe when I stay in Australia for many years, I have influenced by Australian culture, young people should be independent; she should rely on herself rather than parents.
And it’s too early for a Uni student to carry a Gucci bag, probably she will be laughed by her classmates in Melbourne Uni if she does, and even I try to buy her one, she doesn’t care about it at all: “No, no,no, I don't need one.”
“Ok, that’s cool, whatever you like, as long as you are happy, that’s all.”
I guess my daughter will be happier if I enjoy myself than worrying about her life.
Then I encourage her: “If you have a job, please buy a few good quality ones than too many crap things.

- A bag or others things just be tools which convinence and good quality is enough. I don't understand why so many people spend so much money on a bag or shoes till now, although I agree that many designs is beautiful. Jewelry is just beautiful stones. fashion has nothing to do with luxury。
