Back to Uni time

I am writing this article in the library; I haven't been there for more than ten years.

The time I studied English in ECNU, Shanghai, I was well-known by some of the librarians as I spent most of the time in the language lab after classes and was the last one left.

I borrowed tape recorder, listening English textbooks while doing multiple choices, true and false, looking up the dictionary for the unknown vocabularies and phrases.

That was not an easy job. Without practising day by day, I doubt I would have passed English self-taught listening exams organised by Shanghai International StudiesUni.

The rest of the time, I used to sit in the lecture theatre with 10-year younger students doing English reading and writing exercises.

My reading speed was far too slow; it took me a couple of hours to figure out the meaning of one-page text book.

While reading English textbooks, I looked up the dictionary and translated each sentence into Chinese, which completely slowed down the speed.

I don't think that's the good habit of English reading; I won't recommend it.

Without thinking about Chinese meaning, now I can finish one book in a few days.

When I was a student, I found study at home was very inefficient, most time I was distracted and fell asleep immediately.

Now I’ve got lots plans and made a to-do list, but I have problem finish it on time.

It’s not unusual when I sit in front of the computer clicking the mouse, checking how many people have joined Englishpassion, how many have read the blogs and checking the Wechat moments, emails, text messages and Facebook.

I’m afraid I've got a serious addiction.

Especially in the afternoon, it’s so easy to walk into the bedroom and then fall asleep again.

What am I doing?  I feel bad for not being able to complete the tasks on the to-do-list, one day is over.

Here I am in the library. I dress up as if I am working in the office; now I have created a productive study environment with young students and professionals surrounded.

That view outside the window is sensational!!!! I’ve got a sense back to the Uni.

Life is not about what we are supposed to do: earn money and pay bills, most employees are not content with their jobs

A boss could be an adventurer, who creates the positions for employees to realise his dream. If a person fits the position perfectly, then that would be a good match.

One Aussie consultant lady Nancy runs a small business; she has contracted with our company.

One day, I couldn't help asking: “Are you a workaholic?” “Yes, I am.” She was very proud of being a hard worker.

That’s true, Nancy is very enthusiastic about accounting; she has a double degree (IT and accounting) with many years of professional accounting experience though she stopped CPA study.

She’s like doing creative art helping the boss to make decisions for the structural change of the company.

One colleague told us: “Can you believe, Nancy called me at 11:00 pm and 7:00 am in regards to the company work.”

Sometimes, Nancy won't stop working until 1 to 2 o’clock in the morning and still work on weekends or during holidays.

She’s the lucky one, earns good money and doing exactly what she loves.

The other Aussie colleague Susan complained, “Nancy enjoys work so much, that’s her passion. I will turn off the mobile after work.”

Susan is right; no one has the right to chase her up after working hours unless she gets paid.

Susan is one of the most responsible workers I have ever known, she works very hard and doing an excellent job for the company.

The rest of the time, Susan wanna to be who she born is, get less stressed having a relaxing lifestyle.

Susan needs time to do what she’s passionate about: yoga, baking and cooking etc.

I am similar to Susan; I can be a responsible worker doing a great job in accounting.

But that’s all, I earn money to buy food, clothes, or pay for travelling. Every day I deal with invoices, numbers, sort out emails and solve the problems.

I can’t handle if I work 80 hours a week with no leisure time. I’d better earn less money so that I can do what I love: reading, writing, dancing or visiting friends.

After started writing, I found everything is meaningful.

I am not afraid even the company shut down and losing a permanent position because I am not particularly looking for the stable life, that’s not my purpose come to Australia.

I accept the reality, no matter what happens to me, they can be the great material in my writing.

All I need is the life experience, meet different people and understand the different culture, experience ups and downs.

How about you, friends? Have you discovered what you truly love to do?

Please make a plan and take action. I believe your life will change, probably, one day you will sit in the library, or chase up dream you lost when you were a child or a student, the time you had to do what your parents requested.

Now it’s time to start your journey and bring back the happy moment just like you were a Uni student.
