One can start a dream at any age

494 views. 2018-6-26 17:13

Some people enjoy the life what is supposed to have. After the Uni, luckily get a permanent position in a desirable company, happily married with lovely kids, taking care of grandchildren after retirement, a happy ending!!!

Some are not satisfied with the current life; they get excited after hearing wonderful stories from friends, relatives, movies or books.

They wish one day they could win TattsLotto, marry a wealthy person or wait for the miracle happen.

They are looking for the adventure anxiously, but do not dare to take the risk. If it fails, the living standards will deteriorate.

They are scared of losing a secure job which can maintain a comfortable lifestyle: house, car, education, fashionable clothes, shoes, bags, restaurants and holidays.

The one with an extraordinary life is the one who holds a dream and takes action.

Please don’t get the advice from your family, friends or colleagues: “You are already 25, 30, 40 or 50, don’t be silly, it’s very unrealistic to start a dream.”

Because the ones who tell you are ordinary, how can they understand your feeling, and you are the master of your life.

Everyone can start a dream when there’s a calling inside you: “I must do it, I just like it.”

One question, will you quick the job if you are single? Or your children have grown up if you earn half million CNY (100,000AUD) per year, your wife or husband loves you who can never live without, you have lovely children and nice friends around.

But you don’t feel full, you always loved painting, your Dad told you when you were a teenager: “Listen, I guess to be a stockbroker can be more rewarding.”

Fortunately, you realised Dad’s dream to be successful, but you don’t feel happy because you have insufficient time to do what you love-painting.

It seems an impossible dream. Everyone tells you must face the reality in your 40s; you should be responsible for the family rather than being selfish thinking about a dream.

In the book: The Moon and Sixpence, Charles Strickland, a stockbroker face the same issue.

Like anyone else, Strickland lived an ordinary life with a 14-year-old daughter and a 16-year-old son, his wife is an excellent house-keeper and an admirable mother.

One day, Strickland left a note to his wife: “I have made up my mind to live apart from you. And I am going to Paris in the morning. I shall not come back. My decision is irrevocable.”

His wife startled:“After all, he’s forty, I could understand it in a young man, but I think its horrible in a man of his years, with children who are nearly grown up. His health will never stand it.”

“Tell him that our home cries out for him. Everything is just the same, and yet everything is different, I can’t live without him. I’d sooner kill myself.”

Strickland said: “I've supported her for seventeen years, why shouldn’t she support herself for a change?”

She can’t.”

“Let her try.” “They think a man leaves them only because he wants others. I want to paint.”

“But you’re forty,”

“That’s what made me think it was high time to begin.”

“Have you ever painted?”

Strickland: “I rather wanted to be a painter when I was a boy, but my father made me go into business because he said there was no money in art. I began to paint a bit a year ago. For the last year, I’ve been going to some classes at night.”

“What makes you think you have any talent?”

“I’ve got to paint.”

“Of course a miracle may happen, and you may be a great painter, but you must confess the chances are a million to one against it.”

“I’ve got to paint,” he repeated.

“I tell you I've got to paint. I can’t help myself when a man falls into the water; it doesn’t matter how he swims, well or badly: he’s got to get out or else he’ll drown.”

- W. Somerset Maugham - The Moon and Sixpence

When Strickland turned to 40, there‘s only one thing touches his heart- painting, regardless no one supports and understands him.

Have you ever had the courage to chase up your dream, start a new life which is full of uncertainty when you are no longer young?

Quite a lot of people pursue a dream which is money-driven, they follow the trend, when everyone is running an online shop, they join in and sell the product which is nothing special, they spend lots time and put tremendous effort, but can’t earn much money as it’s too late to enter.

When Wechat subscription is increasingly popular, someone wants to be a boss and create an account.

They are wondering what to do and copy from web celebrities who earn one million a year.

They withdrew after a while because there were not enough followers; it would be very hard to keep going without having the passion for it.

Therefore, please don't waste time to ask what you should do, it’s better to discover what you really enjoy and start doing it.

In the book, The Moon and Sixpence, Strickland gave up the high salary position as a stockbroker and decided to paint which no one could tell it was money-making.

What he said: “I've got to paint, I’ve got to paint.”

Painting didn’t bring him luck, in fact, he became poor, sick and lived the life of poverty since he went to Paris, but it doesn’t matter, he only cares about painting which brings him inner happiness.

In Tahiti, Strickland borrowed two hundred Francs from a trader; in return, he gave him a picture of the plantation.

The wife said: “We can never hang it up, people would laugh at us.” So they put it away with all sorts of rubbish

She said: “It does not resemble the plantation and I have never seen coconuts with blue leaves.”

It was until Strickland died for some years; the picture was offered 30,000 francs by agents from Paris.

Everyone can pursue a dream; probably you don’t have to quit the job or go to Tahiti, but must do something turn you on which brings tremendous joy even no money making.

Only at that time, you will enjoy every minute of it; it is just like Strickland said: I’ve got to paint, I’ve got to paint.

Only you do what you love, you will keep persistence, you will never give up no matter what happens because nothing can bring you more pleasure than what you are doing.

So follow your dream, your life will change, one can start a dream at any time.

What is your dream, my friends?
