The other day I finished reading a mystery novel called Malice, which is one of the representative works of Keigo Higashino, a Japanese writer chiefly known for his mystery novels. Here is the main content of the novel:
A best-selling writer named Hidaka was killed in his own house on the night before he was going to go abroad. His corpse was found by his wife and his friend Nonoguchi, who is his junior high school classmate and also a writer. After detection, officer Kaga inferred from the collected evidence that Nonoguchi committed the murder case. According to Nonoguchi's confession, his motive for the killing is that he was threatened to ghostwrite for Hidaka after his affair with Hidaka's wife was exposed. Afterward, the shocking news was spread around the country and everyone began to despise the so-called writer. However, police Kaga suspected all along his confession and he found the truth eventually after a series of deepened research. In fact, Monoguich bears great malice against Hidaka despite the fact that Hidaka helped him a lot. His final purpose not only is to kill Hidaka, but also to make Hidaka lose all his standing and reputation.
I have been totally addicted to the novel for a whole week. I believe that many readers wonder why Hidaka's kindness and helpful character contributes to Nonoguchi's malice to him. As far as I am concerned, I think Nonoguchi's envy of his friend's success is the main factor. All of us would be jealous of others, but we know how to control it because it will be scary when envy becomes hatred. In addition, I think the second factor is that Hidaka has not helped Nonoguchi in a proper way. Helping others does not mean that we are superior to others and thus we should not flatter ourselves. In the meanwhile, we had better try to take care other's self-respect when we want to lend a hand.
All in all, we should treasure the kindness around us because there is horrible malice in the world and we should pursue the light because we know how fearful dark is.
