When we are children, our parents may peep at our diaries. When we grow older, we may be bombarded with spam messages and strange calls. There is no doubt that our privacy is being invaded.
However, these aren't the worst. I will show you another example.
In 2004, after boasting that he had personal data of some 4,000 of his social network's users, Mark Zuckerberg, the boss of Facebook, offered to show whatever information his friend wanted to see. Apparently, he disregarded users' privacy.
Just as an old saying goes, a leopard cannot change its spots. Last month, in Washington, Mr. Zuckerberg apologized for the leakage of data on 50m users to a political-campaign firm.
On a personal note, Mr. Zuckerberg is digging his own grave. He is destroying users' trust built in 14 years. He is destroying Facebook built in 14 years. He is destroying himself built in 14 years. The crack of doom didn't fall upon us in 2012, but it fell upon Mr. Zuckerberg in 2018.
To begin with, everyone's right to privacy cannot be violated. Privacy is to an individual what a light tower is to ships. Without privacy, we will become Truman and the world we live in will become the Seahaven Island. In addition, what Mr. Zuckerberg has done is an open violation of business ethics. As a businessman, he is acting entirely in his own interests, which is justified, but he shouldn't betray users' privacy in the slightest. On top of that, a person who does not take into account the overall situation is not qualified for a leader. We are not certain what will be in store for Facebook, but the prospects will not improve in the short term.
In reality, the privacy leakage is just the tip of iceberg and it sets me thinking a lot. With the advent of Age of Big Data, everything about us can be easily collected, analyzed and concluded. Thus, we are naked in front of big data. Meituan knows where we live. Taobao knows what we want to buy.And Weibo knows what appeals to us.
Big data is changing our life in all respects without our knowledge. I think the solution to this problem lies in how to strike a balance between utilizing users' privacy and providing better service, which is not mutually exclusive. That's what counts most.
