This week I watched a TED speech from a journalist whose job is to talk to people from all walks of life. What impressed me most is not her eloquence or inspiration but her genuine and sincere narration. Her topic is What Makes You Different. There is no doubt that there are a thousand Hamlets in a thousand people's eys as per this wheezy question. Here I just want to talk about my opinions.
In fact when I entered a totally different environment and finally clicked with someone, making a friend was a special reward. It is obvious that everybody wants to feel valued and accepted and we think it should happen spontaneously, but it doesn't. When you're different, you have to work at belonging. It occurred to me that when I was a high school student, I was assigned to sit with a girl who is always alone and furthermore, a little quirky. At that time I felt she got in the way with her shyness and odd character. I was consumed by my own selfishness and unable to put myself in her shoes. Today when we label someone as different, it dehumanizes them in a way. They become " the other."
So, how do we recognize our blind spots? On a personal note it begins by understanding what makes you different by embracing those traits. Only then can you begin to appreciate what makes others special. It's like we're stuck in those bubbles that nobody wants to burst, and the only way to get out of it is to realize that being different also means thinking differently. In the words of Voltaire:" I may not agree what you say, but I will fight to the death to defend your right to say it." Finally what I would like to say is that nobody has a claim on the word "normal." We are all different, quirky and unique, and that is what makes us wonderfully human.
