Last Friday was November 10th, the whole dormitory including myself stayed up late to wait for the coming of November 11th to buy budget things.The reason is obvious. November 11th is known as Double Eleven Day in China and at this day many online shops make a sale for celebration.

But today, what I want to talk about is not Double Eleven Day in China.Instead, I want to talk about the Veterans Day in the United States. Veterans Day originates from the World War I.The public at that time called it "the war to end all wars". More than 13 million reported for duty. Consequently, large groups of men and women sacrifice their lives on the battle-field. Finally, World War I ended when Germany surrendered at 11 o'clock in the morning on November 11th ,1918, put another way, at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. One year later, President Woodrow Wilson signed a declaration to observe November 11th as Armistice Day in the United States and he called for civilizations to remember this war forever. In 1926, Congress made Armistice Day a national holiday . Then, in 1954, Congress decided to change the name of Armistice Day to Veterans Day because of World War II. And now , Veterans Day is a national holiday. On November 11th , communities across the country hold ceremonies and parades to mark Veterans Day and solders fire guns into the air in a salute to remember those who died in service to this country. The significance of this holiday has been changing. At the beginning, it commemorated the peace around the world. Then, it changed to memorize soldiers. Nowadays, it is a holiday for all people who dedicated for their countries during peace time.

The point I am trying to make here is that Veterans Day is a meaningful day and it is worth our attention so I hope that more people in our country can know something about this holiday.I hold that what we should focus on are those events that happened around the world especially because we are English mayor students. So I sincerely suggest you squeeze a little more time to know this world better.
