AFTER Band Four Exam, the professor said there would be an Opera Class for the rest of the term. Each class in English Department shall plot an English Opera and act it publicly in the Eastern Art Department, when students and professors all over the school would come and watch them. Professor Hu said the opera would be perfectly splendid they’d better not loose the chance. Sophie enrolled all at once. She was extremely active this time. 

The next day Sophie reached the classroom very early to discuss the script. The girls reeled their brains selecting a proper theme. They were busily criticizing and applauding as one after another ideas were proposed. At last, they decided to act a sad girl who was rejected by her lover, wanted to jump down the main building, and finally resumed her courage by the help of her roommates and the passers-by. Sophie found it non-sense, but it was the collective decision, and she had to comply with it. Still actively Sophie helped to name the characters. The heroin was called Saddy, for she always seek sadness in the air. And the fickle guy called Chen Shimei. 

The next day, they handed in the script to the professor. The professor agreed them to act this play out, and she helped them modify the English version. Once the script was settled, they began to distribute the characters. Sophie wanted very much to be a heroine, but was too shy to compete and argue with her classmates. At last, she could only be a passer-by in a play. She was very unhappy, but she said nothing. 

For the next few days, the girls began to prepare and rehearse for the show. Everyone did his job wholeheartedly, only Sophie was absent minded. When others were performing, she read her text books in the corner. And when it was her turn to perform, she merely read her part sitting on her own seat.
