Chapter 35 Dreams and future

Hot 1750 views. 2020-7-14 22:38 |Individual Classification:Ivory Academy

It gave Sophie very uncomfortable dreams on Sunday morning. She dreamed about running in freedom on the mountaintop in the morning sunshine. She was in great joy. Suddenly a great paper crane soared nearby. It swooped down beside Sophie. Burnt with curiosity, Sophie sat on the crane. All of a sudden the paper crane flew down the cliff carrying her. She felt dreadful. She did not know where she should land next. She wanted very much to return to the mountaintop, but a kind of invisible force dragged her along aimlessly. She was descending and descending, not knowing the end of the journey…

It was long after the break of day, when she awakened from her dream. The other girls had already left. Everyone had aimed at their goals and struggled for their future except her. She was still in her miserable dreams.

At breakfast Sophie thought about her future. She decided to be diligent from then on. She knew as a first step she must learn English very well. Once she spoke fluent English and wrote standard English, she can be successful in her future exams and careers.

With this plan in her mind, she walked to the library. She wanted to read some books carefully. However, she was late and there was no seat left in the large reading rooms. So she had to run to the first floor. Then she discovered a small reading room “Newly Devoted Books Reading room”. In fact every time Sophie came to the library she would pass this small reading room, but she never got in. Today, not being able to find a single seat in the large reading rooms, she had to come here and try her luck.

She pushed the door open and she thought she was very lucky, as she found the right place. The seats were all empty. Only an aged teacher was reading alone quietly. Sophie trotted in at once. A small cozy room it was. On the tall bookshelves which almost touched the ceiling, laid books devoted by a lot of famous professors. There were Chen Xingshen’ s books written in English and German, as well as books belonging to the professors that Sophie did not know. However, Sophie was quite interested in all books displayed: A Collection of Young Zhou’ s Essays, and a special version of A Collection of Li A’ s Works, all brand new. Sophie took out A Collection of Li A’ s Works and fell to devouring the book afresh. She was reading Li A’ s views on the translation of poems. Sophie used to be very worried about the English translation of Chinese poems. Her translation had turned the rhythmic Chinese poem to English sentences as plain as pure water, totally losing the taste of the original version. It was Li who offered the most precise and rhythmic English translation. He even managed to translate some English poems to Chinese ancient poems, and achieved great success. Some of his versions were even better than the original ones. As Sophie was reading she made a lot of notes, and was very inspired.

Then she read one of Li’ s novels based on the history of Fayuan Temple. Through this novel she got to know Li’ s views on the Hundred Days Reform in the late Qing Dynasty. An afternoon passed very quickly. Sophie read many books and she felt very satisfied.

From then she favored this little reading room. As soon as the classes were over she would run here and indulge herself in reading. When she got tired she had conversations with the teacher in charge of this reading room. She talked about the books she read and the teacher recounted long stories about her youth. She always encouraged her to read more and more books, but also disapproved of her childish opinions she revealed while talking. Sometimes Sophie was so indulged in her reading that she had no time to for lunch. The teacher gave her boiled eggs and braised beef for her to eat.

Sophie made her final determination. She chose writing instead of applying for graduate schools. She had indulged herself in writing and to some degree writing had become part of her hopes in life. Of course, she was very clear, one needs great courage to be unique and try something new. However, she did try a unique way of life. She loved taking risks, or tasting the way of life which was strange for others. Other people’s good advice or even sarcastic remarks could not persuade her to make any slight chances. She had found true happiness in writing, and she was willing to devote herself to it. Everyday she plotted her novel wholeheartedly. When she was composing her novel she was as careful as a mother looking for her own child: Built frames for her novel, feed her with enough nutrition, and grow up together with it.
