Abasement and confidence are both given by oneself rather than imposed by the outside. A confident man, however suppressed and left out, will always be confident, and an abased man however envied and complimented will after all feel abased.
There are two kinds of perseverance: one is of the body, and the other is of the mind. The former is to compel yourself to work harder, and the latter is trying to struggle out of your character defects, and develop a favourable mental state.
To rise above the ordinary, one has to suffer the bitterest. He who endures the material hardship would not only have more stamina of the body, but also, while strong in the spirit, know to quit being self-centered and excessively vain, his heart modest and behaviour genial.
Diligence is the only way for a mediocre man to procure external recognition. A man who is diligent but not successful may seem like a fool, but diligence is always the mother of success.
