A man can never be permanently cheerful, since it is almost a risky state. When there is a reason to be exalted, it is accompanied by the risk that this elated feeling may be challenged by the suspicion of a contrary reason. When you feel brave enough to conquer any hardship, you will be frustrated at the thought of an authentic trouble; when you lie in your bed and believe that no serious stress will trouble the rest of your life, stressors soon knock at your door. All these effects are caused by overly innocent reasoning: Life can be decided once and for all. And the other side is much the same: A man will not be forever downcast, while you are so only because you on overcast days desire to travel, and on sunny days haven’t drawn back the curtains. So long as life endures, every character on the stage will not be excluded from the changing of scenes.
