Soul Sounds

Hot 31094 views. 2013-11-14 11:01 | friend, disabled, speak, training, speak, speak, speak

Canadian Daniel Ling created Ling Six method to help teaching speech to deaf people, esp. those with cochlear implants. The Ling Six consists of the sounds /m/,/u/, /i/, /a/, /sh/, /s/, from low to high audio ranges.

I knew about the Ling Six through my friend Jiaping, who has become totally deaf for nearly twenty years. She can talk to us by her childhood memory about language; however, we have to communicate with her by writing, lip-language or sign language. Past weeks, I’ve been assisting her practise the Ling Six. While I took every pronunciation for granted, she could sense any subtle variations of my speaking frequencies. It pained me to see her difficulty of catching the six “meaningful” sounds in the world full of “meaningless” noises to her. The agonies in the silent world is beyond my imagination… No wonder her husband had spent 130,000 RMB on her cochlear implant surgery, saying her hearing recovery is much more important than purchasing a house.

Every two days, Sister Jiaping would come to my home for her Ling Six training until the night curtain fell. Then she would cook rich suppers for me. We would try different directions and distances, taking breaks when tired and thirsty. She’s made great progress in correct listening, esp. the lowest audio frequency /m/. Before long she’ll travel to Chongqing with her husband for formal recovery training. On our parting last night, she gave me a big hug, and we held each other’s hands like two children. She told me, “Study well, write well, and live well.”

I nodded my thumb, as the only sign languages I’ve learnt, to show “Thank you.”

Hopefully Sister Jiaping could hear me well at her return and find a steady job as she expected.

Hey Bluebird! Long time no see. The moment I saw your name on the screen, I clicked your blog. I just wanted to know how things were with you. It's very kind of you to aid Jiaping in learning the Ling Six. I can't imagine living in a world of silence, being unable to communicate with others. So what you did really means a lot to her. Best wishes!

Yeah, miss you, too! These days I've really met across lots of new people and lots of new happenings. I can't offer her professional aids, just letting her know there's always a help hand and a friend for her.
