Salt-Buying Panic

2529 views. 2011-3-21 23:19 |

Panic swept through the Japanese when their nuclear plant was damaged during the earthquake and tsunami. Now the nuclear crisis is also causing concerns in China.

Since March 16, supermarkets in parts of China have seen waves of consumers buying salt and they have run out of salt in just a matter of days.

Why we Chinese rushed to buy salt? There were mainly two reasons. One was that nuclear radiation leaked in Japan might have polluted the sea water, thus the safety of salt could be in question. The other was that consuming enough iodized salt would protect against radiation.

However, according to an expert in the industry, most of China’s salt is made from mineral salt instead of sea salt. And he said, even China’s sea salt would not be polluted because of the long distance between China and Japan. Later, the Ministry of Health refuted the rumor that eating more iodine-rich salt could offset damage from radiation. Health experts told people that regular table salt doesn’t contain enough iodine to block the poisoning.

Considering the buying panic, different people had different views. Some blamed it on people’s ignorance, while others laughed at people who were easy to foment. But I hold my own opinion. What can they do if there is no salt at home and no salt in the supermarkets? They bought salt just for a living. It was the government that should have kept the rumors from spreading and popularize the knowledge of radiation.

Homes are now overloaded with packages of salt. Soon, special shops would open to re-sell the overbought salt at cheap prices.

I believe it has something to do with education. As I mentioned in the article, the government should popularize the knowledge of radiation.

The structure "it's easy to do" can be a passive voice. So when I said "they are easy to foment", I mean "to be fomented".

Shall we say it is a kind of penalty or punishment for unecessary panic or hoarding. Some members of the public have to be educated in this manner.

Actually, I don't think we should blame people for the panic buying. As I mentioned, some people were afraid that there wouldn't be any salt when they really lacked it. What's more, the government should have kept the rumor from spreading and popularize the knowledge of radiation.

yes, maybe relevant departments and those who rushing in to buy salt should be responsible for the panic. But from some news, it's investors in Zhejiang, expecially Wenzhou investors who take good use of rumor. Before they spreading the rumor, they bought enough stocks related to salt industry in stock market. Once they bought enough stocks, they begin spreading the rumor. which caused a pinic throughout the   country, even in HK and Macao. with the rumor speading on, the stocks related to salt becomes bullish day after day. Then a lot of investors follow in. With big profit, the Zhejiang investors sell out all the salt related stocks they bought in advance. Some analysts think it's the Zhejiang investors who manipulate the stock market. if that's the truth, those investors should go to die.

If they spread rumors for their profits, they should suffer a penalty.
