Canada day is the national day of Canada, a federal statutory holiday celebrating the anniversary of the July 1, 1867, enactment of the British North America Act, which united three British colonies into a single country, called
Canada, within the British Empire. Originally called Dominion Day, the name was changed in 1982, the year that Canada gained full
independence from the United Kingdom. Canada Day observances take place
throughout Canada as well as internationally.

National Anthem: O Canada
"O Canada" was proclaimed Canada's national anthem on July 1, 1980, 100
years after it was first sung on June 24, 1880. The music was composed
by
Calixa Lavallée,
a well-known composer; French lyrics to accompany the music were
written by Sir Adolphe-Basile Routhier. The song gained steadily in
popularity. Many English versions have appeared over the years. The
version on which the official English lyrics are based was written in
1908 by Mr. Justice Robert Stanley Weir. The official English version
includes changes recommended in 1968 by a Special Joint Committee of the
Senate and House of Commons. The French lyrics remain unaltered.

O Canada!
Our home and native land!
True patriot love in all thy sons command.
With glowing hearts we see thee rise,
The True North strong and free!
From far and wide,
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
God keep our land glorious and free!
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee. |
