something about grammer

1085 views. 2011-9-29 14:20 |

one of my friends asked me do the content of those grammer books change all the time? or they are like permanent things and never got changed? i am totally confused about this questions, actually, i have nooooo idea, but then, i found out the answer in TKT( teaching knowledge test) book.
grammer rules describe the way that language works, but language changes over time, so grammer rules are not fixed. they change too. unfortunately, grammer rules and grammer books don't always change as quickly as language, so they are not always up to date. for example, some grammer books say that we should use 'whom' rather than 'who' after prepositions, but, in fact, except in some situations, who is generally used, in a different word order, e.g. 'I've just met the girl who I talked to on friday' is much common and accepted than 'I've just met the girl to whom I talked on friday'.
we need to keep up to date what parts of language are changing and how.
enjoy~

Yes, the only definitive matter is the relativity in all matters.

Funny story, More than a few times I have been asked to provide grammar interpretation for my students. I believe I have a good understanding in the general grammar in use, but more generic answer I can give to my students is to develop their own thinking pattern in English.

As part of language, grammar is relatively stable. A sentence is probably as grammatical this year as it will be next year. So a grammar book seldom changes in terms of the grammar rules it overs. If a language changes, it is largely due to its changing vocabluary. Some words go out of use and, eventually, are  forgotten. Others are here to stay. Meanwhile, new words are invented to designate things or express concepts that just have emerged. The vocabulary of a language changes so much that no dictionaries can record all the observed changes, not to mention those unnoticed ones.

Maybe ,for example:the grammer is different from American English to  Engliand English.I think grammer is just a basic for students, expecially for exam. For more we'd like to use.I lessly think over the grammer when I speak,so it won't limited what we are saying.

that's one of the headache for learning a language. if you rest, you rust---it's a lifetime project. if we want to master a foreign language well, we have to keep learning.
