Firewall or Fool Wall?

God will open another window for you when He closed one, and I did believe the maxim. However, what will happen to you if God clings to force you to look out of an exclusive window that He designated and closed the rest windows that you’d like to enjoy yourselves as will. The only reason is that you are required to watch what God allow you to watch. Ready-made scenery awaits you outside of the designated window, while other sceneries are forbidden because you are categorized into the unsuitable to watch and enjoy, and you are supposed to lose your mind if you exposed too much scenes at your liberty.

For now, I must be misunderstood for talking about obscurantism that prevailed in Qin Dynasty or late Qing Dynasty. Unfortunately, it is happening in the modern age labelled as democracy, freedom and opening-up, epitomizing with internet block or limitation. It is well known that the internet ranks as one of the most critical inventions in humankind, which excites and intrigues numerous grassroots people, and turns them into netizens from citizens who yearn to access new thought, trend, viewpoint and constantly broaden their horizon. Moreover, the internet allows them to seek what they want to get, speak their voice out, and finally offsets the only one yet the long-dominated authoritative voice in public space. Like lighting in darkness, it shatters the skyscraper occupied by media-monopolist into pieces overnight. During a period, netizens have indulged themselves in the endless sea of information and knowledge, seeking the truth in the university and forging their judgement.

In 2012, Great Firewall (GFW) came to the surface in cyberspace, designing to prevent users from visiting designated websites rather than improving internet performance and user’s satisfaction. From then on, Internet users cannot access Google to search academic information but have to be flooded with hype advertisement in Baidu. Neither can they contact foreigners on Twitter or keep in touch with friends abroad on Facebook. Either, they are unable to review any newspaper beyond China. GFW chokes off the most common communication tool globally, to a certain extent, cuts off our connection with the world. How to deal with a conundrum for those in the urgency to access these resources? The only solution is to get VPN at the cost of several hundred bucks per year.

Maybe, the designer of GFW already knew the control would shape a booming market and took delight in contributing to the increase of GDP. Ironically, he instantly became a laughing stock in an international academic conference when he confessed that he brought two VPN with himself in order to visit foreign websites. It reminded me of a report about Kim Jong Il, the president of North Korea, who gave an order after indulging himself on the internet: “Nobody is allowed to access the internet”. In the world, we always found some people who bash away at a wall keeping others in darkness. Never have they perceived that they would also be devoured in the darkness till the wall collapse
