"Guangdong Spring Festival Trip: Unexpected Experiences in Coastal Cities"

Hey everyone, during the Spring Festival break, I visited Guangdong and checked out several coastal cities like Guangzhou, Shunde, Zhongshan, and Zhuhai. Before the trip, I had high expectations, imagining these places as modern cities with open minds, friendly service, and unique designs since they’re all coastal special zones. But as I traveled, I found that the reality didn’t quite match my imagination.

City Impressions: A Modernization with Boundaries Let’s start with the city infrastructure. I expected these coastal cities to have an open, international vibe, but what I found was more like a “fenced-in” feeling. Many residential areas and parking lots had barriers specifically targeting out-of-town vehicles, charging fees as soon as you enter, which felt a bit isolated. It made me wonder if this approach could make tourists feel less welcome.

Dining Experience: Small Disappointments in the Details When it comes to food, Guangdong’s cuisine is fantastic, but I was surprised that many restaurants didn’t offer free napkins. You had to pay extra if you wanted them. Although I understand it might be for cost-saving, as a tourist, it felt a bit unusual. After all, in many places, napkins are a standard service, and here, it felt like an added extra.

Lifestyle Scene: Drinking Culture and Surprises The most surprising moment happened in a restaurant, where I saw five guys and two girls, seven people in total, drinking six bottles of beer. As a northerner, I was shocked by how “generous” their drinking was! In the north, this might not even be enough for one round. But it also made me realize how different lifestyle and cultural norms can be. What seemed like overindulgence to me might simply be their way of being enthusiastic.

Conclusion: The Realities Behind the Surprises Though my trip to Guangdong had plenty of surprises, it allowed me to see a more authentic side of these cities. They may not be as perfect as I imagined, but their imperfections made them feel more real. Modernization and openness aren’t just about architecture and design, but also about how people interact and provide services. I hope these cities can continue developing while also becoming more welcoming and inclusive to out-of-town visitors.
