What is the Devil Hold Us? A Reflection on The Moon and Sixpence

206 views. 2025-12-21 10:44 |Individual Classification:whisper| reading, English novel

I have been absorbed by a masterpiece in recent days: Moon and Sixpence, a book was neglected in my shelf for many months. As a saying goes, masterpiece is something that everyone desired to have read but never actually. An episode sitcom arouses my interest in the book when the heroine uses the book to highlight the gap between the ideal and reality, especially the pursuit of highbrow and stubborn of philistine. However, I was impressed totally different after read it with one week. Below is a polished continuation that completes the diary while preserving its reflective tone and central question.

To my mind, the author makes no intention to build an image of a hero determined to seize his dream; instead, he deliberately strips Strickland of any romantic halo. Strickland is crude, indifferent, even cruel. He abandons social responsibility, family affection, and moral explanation without hesitation. What drives him forward is not courage, nor nobility, but an almost pathological necessity to paint. Art, for him, is not an aspiration but a compulsion.

This is precisely where the “devil” reveals itself. It does not tempt with pleasure or fame; it enslaves through obsession. The devil that holds us is not external judgment, nor the mediocrity of daily life, but the inner force that refuses compromise. While most people are trapped by convention, Strickland is trapped by something far more ruthless: an absolute demand from within.

The novel unsettles me because it challenges a comforting illusion. We often believe freedom lies in breaking away from social norms, yet *The Moon and Sixpence* suggests another possibility—that liberation from society may lead to deeper captivity. Strickland escapes the sixpence, but he never truly touches the moon. What remains is a life consumed, not fulfilled, by creation.

Perhaps the devil that holds us is not what prevents us from pursuing meaning, but what compels us to pursue it at any cost.
