After 15 Years

570 views. 2011-10-27 16:09 |

The National Day just left us. There were so many people getting married during the golden week and the marriage thing just reminded me of my classmates in elementary school.

It was the Spring Festival of 2011, one of my classmates Xiao got married and invited me for his wedding ceremony. I hadn’t seen him for 15 years since the graduation of elementary school. His uncle was the employee of a small grocery in Changsha and had worked hard in it for 8 years. Finally the boss was moved by his loyalty and gave him the grocery as prize. His uncle worked hard to earn enough money to open a chain of retail stores. Xiao just graduated from elementary school and had no other places to go, so he followed his uncle to do business.

Before long, his uncle retired and enjoyed leisure. Though Xiao always did poor on studying in elementary school and was despised by teachers and classmates, but he was tough and good at business. His wealth was nearly ten million Yuan now and was the richest among all my classmates from elementary school to university.

At his wedding banquet, he was very confident and talked aloud, which was really different from him in elementary school. During elementary school, he was shy and self-contemptuous because of the poor school report. Now he wore Youngor business suit and with golden necklace as thick as finger around his neck. His diamond wedding ring was probably the most expensive ever in my village. Watching him lifting up his horn, I was a little disgusted and sighed that success could make a man really confident.

I had to admit that his wife was very pretty and probably the prettiest bride in my village. I was a little jealous, though reluctant to admit that. I comforted myself in heart, “what’s the use of beauty? Nothing but a vase.” But I was speechless when my other classmates told me his wife graduated from Nanjing University. Now his wife was just like the CEO of all his chain stores, Xiao was only the boss.

The following night, Xiao invited all old classmates to the biggest club of town to a spree. I said to him with good intention, “don’t you need to worry about your wife? She may become angry.” Xiao just answered contemptuously, “what’s the big deal? It’s just my uncle forced me to get married with her. Who cares?” Under the heavy music and colorful light, I sat in the corner silently. Some classmates invited me to sing and drink, I just refused them politely. Xiao showed his understanding, “don’t force him. He is an intellectual.” Then he hugged two girls and sang like killing a pig.

Until the following noon, Xiao got up and invited us to play in Wuhan, saying the town was a small place without much fun. He owned three cars and a minibus, which were enough for all of us. I just used an excuse to refuse him politely. So Xiao and his followers all went to Wuhan to have a carnival.

My heart was mixed with all kinds of feelings, but I couldn’t even say one of them clearly. I just walked casually on the road. Suddenly I raised my head and found my elementary school was already in my eyes.

I was very surprised, the elementary school was totally changed and it was not the same elementary school in my mind. The campus was full of withered leaves. Some classroom roofs even collapsed. Horizontal bar and parallel bars became very rusty. There wasn’t a single person in the campus. The place gave me knowledge and happiness just collapsed like an old man. Time could change everything and also destroy everything.

When breeze was blowing, the leaves rolled all over the playground, which only made me sadder. Suddenly someone called my name, I raised my head to look and was only more amazed than I was before. It was my classmate Yin, who was also my best friend in elementary school.

He grinned and was apparently very happy to meet me. He was only thirty years old, but thin and swarthy, even had furrows on his forehead. He asked me to have lunch with him and I followed him happily, finally I met a bosom friend.

Coming to the gate of his house, a little girl greeted him intimately. I was confused, but before I asked, Yin said, “of course you don’t know her. She is my daughter Honger.” The girl was about 10 years old, I never thought Yin’s girl was 10 years old.

Honger was very intelligent and poured tea hurriedly for me. Then she carried all dishes on the table and Yin said all dished were cooked by Honger proudly. I was a little strange, “did her mother visit relatives?”

Yin wanted to force a smile, but failed, “her mother was divorced with me and went to other places.” I wasn’t glib originally and even didn’t know what to say then.

Then we three had dinner together without saying anything. After finishing the dinner, Honger went to inner room to do her homework. Yin and I just sat under the warm spring sunshine. It was really a good day. The sky was incredibly blue, groups of sparrow just chirped happily in trees without leaves, but I felt oppression between us.

Finally Yin broke the silence, forced a smile, “I’m probably the most miserable guy among classmates of elementary school. I’m not afraid of you laughing at me. I’m also the only farmer among us.”

“How could it be possible?” I heard my voice was really weak.

“We haven’t met for more than ten years. You’re my best friend in elementary school. I’m not afraid of telling what happened to me all these years. I was the first to get married. During the first three years after marriage, we felt happy and content. You know I’m a man without great ambition. I just want to own a happy family and I cultivate land to support it without worrying about anything. But when my wife saw other girls came from big cities with fashionable clothes and jewelry, she was reluctant to stay at home with me. I also felt sorry for her. She suffered with me. Those girls were white and fashionable. Every woman loves beauty. My wife was swarthy and wore washed-out clothes. I tried my best to earn money and gave all of them to her to buy new clothes, which wasn’t enough to persuade her to stay.

However, she insisted on going outside, so I had to go outside with her, leaving Honger to my mother, my mother was still alive then. When we were in Foshan, we both worked in factories. I gave all my salaries to her to keep. Every day, I cooked and washed clothes after work. Anyway, I tried my best to treat her well, but she was always picking on me.

She learnt to go to beauty salon…” Yin wasn’t able to continue. I saw his eyes became a little red.

He sighed, “anyway, finally she went away with someone and left Honger and me alone. My mother was so sad and angry that she passed away several months later. So I stay at home to take care of my daughter. The only lucky thing is that she is thoughtful and smart.”

Suddenly my phone rang and my mother told me to visit my maternal grandparents to say happy new year. Yin said, “buddy, we’ll meet another day. Mind your own business today. Really happy to meet you.”

I came to inner room to give five hundred Yuan to his daughter Honger, but Yin and his daughter refused to receive it stubbornly. I had no other choice and bought a bunch of food stuff, finally Yin received. I could see his daughter was really happy, after all, she was a little girl too. Yin gave a bag of mung bean as return gift.

I remembered once a colleague told me, “woman always remembers the man can make her laugh, man always remember the woman can make him cry, but woman always stay with the man can make her cry, man always stay with the woman can make her laugh.” I sneered then and said it was just nonsense, but now it seemed that a man without success, even though his heart was true, but nobody cared, who cared? Even though his heart was bleeding, the woman wasn’t care at all and left without even turning around once.

Though the sunshine was warm, the spring breeze was still blowing with the chillness of winter. I stuck up my collar, carried the bag of mung bean and walked toward my home. No matter how, life still needed to be continued, whether good or not, the final result was always the same. Seeing the road ahead, I had to go on, everyone had to go on, even though you didn’t know what was ahead of you.
