東京も格別のことはなかつた。上野の櫻が満開のころは、眺めはいかにも紅(くれない)の薄雲のようではあつたが、花の下にはきまつて、隊を組んだ「清国留学生」の速成組がいた。頭のてつぺんに辮髪をぐるぐる巻きにし、そのため学生帽が高くそびえて、富士山の恰好をしている。なかには辮髪を解いて平たく巻いたのもあり、帽子を脱ぐと、油でテカテカして、少女の髪にそつくりである。これで首でもひねつてみせれば、色気は満点だ。

Well, among them there are students who had labored themselves in loosening their pigtails, then curling the hairs in a flat manner upon the head; so when the hats were taken off, an oily shining would not fail to feed one’s eyes.
