A baby who smoking

528 views. 2009-6-11 13:44 |Individual Classification:Reflection|

Never in my wildest imaginations had I envisioned blushing at a baby’s words. Here I was, staring at the little boy (two, or at top three years old, still a baby in my eyes) in the video, blushing.  He was speaking the language that literally made me blush. Furthermore, it’s not the toy he was playing with---it’s a cigarette. He lit a cigarette in a most proficient way and started to smoke.

What disturbed me most is the way people around treated him. None of them snatched the cigarette from him or called him to stop. Instead, they giggled, applauded, and encouraged him to go on. Infatuated with their attentions, the baby’s face was split up in a glorious smile, as if he just completed the greatest achievement in the world. Then one of them asked him some X-rated question, which totally should be forbidden to the ears of a baby like him. He answered with something equally improper. I couldn’t watch any more so I turned the video off.

I am not a violent type. But in a moment, I wanted to smother his parents with my own hands. This baby is probably one year old than my son. I can’t imagine what kind of parents would teach their baby boy to smoke and talk dirty.

When I looked into my son’s eyes, I started to believe that the eyes are the window to the soul. A baby’s eyes are so pure, innocent and full of wonder, like a paradise unspoiled by any worldly filth and darkness. I am not naive, and I knew someday such innocence would ebb away. However, as his mother, I’d like to shield him from the facts of life as long as I should. Perhaps that baby’s parents hold a different view about raising their son. Perhaps they worked hard around the clock to give their son a better future and thought it was not bad for him to enter into the society earlier. However, I still could hardly believe a good parent would give their child cigarette instead of candy, and teach him to say *** before thank you.

i cannot agree more. you are not parents because you have children! to raise a child is much more than giving him/her enough food and clothing.

you are absolutely right! I know I have a mountain to climb in raising my son up, keeping him safe, disciplining him, and somehow molding him to a responsible human being. Mummy is indeed a heavy word. It grippes me, even to think about that responsibility, but I believe eventually I would manage that.

I have glimpsed of that video. It's so sad to be the children of such parents. By the way, your writing is excellent. I enjoy reading them.
