Book review: Eat love and pray

I do feel better, mentally and physically. My diarrhea is finally checked. So far, only one run to the bathroom, what a miracle! So it couldn’t be cancer. My husband suggests me to do more checkups to be sure. I don’t want that. No more hospitals, at least right now. Another thing to lighten up my mood is that now my insurance can cover my targeted drugs now, which reduces my hospital bill per month from 5000 yuan to affordable 1000 yuan around.

And I think my yesterday’s writing should also take the credit. It’s like dumping waste into a gutter---and you just feel better afterwards.

Elizabeth uses the same strategy to fight against her own demon: depression and loneliness in Eat, Love and Pray. In fact she goes so far that she actually creates a conversation between her depressed self and her ‘highest’ self in handwriting. Every time it works.

Yes, I went back to Eat love and Pray, a book that I started years ago but never finished—it’s time to tie up the loose ends, to finish once I started.

Eat love and pray is more thank a personal diary than a typical novel. It has not a suspensive story that grips your attentions to keep reading. It is a combination of many trivial, normal, day-to-day stories---a journey of a mid-aged woman who trying to cure her broken self through traveling and conversing with the others. The main character, Elizabeth, might be seen by many as a drama queen, who making ado about nothing.

However, I find somehow related to Elizabeth. Perhaps both of us love travelling, writing, learning foreign languages and we both suffer from depression and try our best to fight endlessly for inner peace.

Now she’s in Italy, learning Italian, enjoying local foods and making friends. In Italian, they believe the beauty of nothing. “The more exquisitely and delightfully you can do nothing, the higher your life’s achievement---it has nothing to do with the fame and fortune. I really like it.

In China we focus too much on hardworking and the world has become more and more stressful and alienating. Perhaps it’s time for us to slow down, pondering more about the pleasure of life. Pleasure should not be like a homework assignment or a scientific project. It needs not planning, organizing, and working. Pleasure is just pleasure, pure and spontaneous, happens when you put anything else down and just enjoy it.
