I acted as a tour guide for a foreigner in the Tomb-sweeping Day.The foreigner is my good friend's colleague, or I don't have the chance to communicate with him. You can't imagine how poor my oral English is.
When I watch the movie or practice my listening, I think that my English listening is good. However, it's very different from what I've expected as soon as I really talk to the foreigner. I found that I couldn't understand him very well. At the beginning, I was a bit nervous, and afraid that I could't make him feel comfortable. When I began to act freely, I found that I still couldn't understand it. I was very disappointed, because I have kept in practicing my English listening for at least half a year. Can't I do well in English ? On the other hand, my speaking English is poorer. I am an engineering student, and I don't have the chance and time to speak with the foreigner. Although I read some English materials and speak some English sentences by myself in the morning, I find that it's quite different from speaking with the real foreigner. I may own many English vocabularies, however, when I communicate with the foreigner, I found I forgot them all and what I could speak is the simple words and sentences. I may have many wonderful sentences in my mind and I have think about them well before I speak, but I just can't express them when I need them. I am a graduate student in Shandong University in Jinan, and I have lead the foreigner to the Baotu Spring, Daming Lake, Thousand-Buddha Mountain and the Hero Mountain Cultural Market. However, I can just speak a few sentences and we keep silence most of the time. What a shame. I really want to take the chance to practice my English, However, I was frustrated by the visit. Can I go to the foreign company when I graduate, I doubt it.
I have taken the first step at least, and this is really a significant holiday. I know studying English in the school may help little when you really use it. After all, we use language to communicate with others or get the useful information. We learn the knowledge in the books, however, we must put them into practice and then we can improve ourselves. We don't need stiff knowledge, we must find a useful way to transform them into skills or the contributions, at least you can measure it.
