South African Sport

Summery

With the first non-white cricket player appointed captain of the national team of South Africa, the country which has been being dogged by equally sport and rece, holds different opinions.

Sport is the most important tool for South Africa to reduce apartheid. Although no formal racial quotas are required in national teams, coaches and selectors have great pressure to increase non-white representation. While ruling African Congress want to see more exact reflection about the teams’ racial makeup. They say that a lot more black players should be selected.

By contrast, some players in the country think the ministers are now too oversensitive on the racial issue. Some South African sportsmen who have been abroad to play games say that formal quotas was an obstacle for their development, that’s why they went abroad. Some white players think it will do hard to the country’s sport if the officials still pay priority to skin colour rather ability.

The Democratic Alliance think government should pay more attention to improve youngsters ability rather than stepping in the selection of players, which is considered as a basic method to achieve the diversity in national teams. People all agree to eliminate the apartheid, but doubt the government’s quota approach.

My Opinion

I do agree that we should see the coloured and the white with the same eye, when it comes to human right. There is no need to write the race when applying for a job, nor is any race sestricted to do anything within the limit of the law. That is the real fairness. It’s obviously normal and wise to select the best for the national team. Then why should some white players be replaced by the non-white ones? Is that action fair to the white?

In my opinion, the presentation of each player should be based on his ability rather than the skin color.

First, vicyory is important to some degree. As South African ministers require a certain racial quota in the national team, I wonder if the coach knows clearly that his team is sure to win if he uses the best players, but he is also afraid of being critized for not using a black one, how will he make a final decision?

Second, if the country has really got rid of racial discrimination, then the word “race” can be removed from the dictionary. What I am trying to point out is that a truly fair country eill care nothing about the race, only the one where apartheid still exists pays too much attention to the so-called quotas.

Just as the Democratic Alliance has said, the government’s role should be to develop and train youngsters by building more sports fields in townships and rural areas, rather than meddling in player selection. ‘It’s a bottom-up approach that will achieve the diversity we should all like to see in our top teams.”

I hope that one day, people will see each other with equal eyes in every walk of life. And we all become extremely serious colour-blinders who even cannot tell the colour white from the colour black.

We should not judge someone by the color of their skin but the content of their character!
