                             An original English-Chinese story

Part Three: Set Foot in Industry

                         Chapter Seventeen

On Saturday evening Molly and Jack arrives at Lijing restaurant early waiting for Steven and his new wife. The restaurant is crowded and it is difficult to find unoccupied seats.

‘Luckily I reserved the table beforehand otherwise we have to go other restaurant. I wonder if there is free dinner here.’

‘The stock market is bullish lately. It is the reason why so many people come here to enjoy dinner. It is always the same on this occasion.’ Molly knows the cause.

‘No wonder it is like a gratis supper. Why don’t they come yet? It is several minutes past seven. I am afraid something bad happens to them.’ He seems to worry.

‘Shut up, baby. Don’t say something of jinx. They may encounter a traffic jam. There they are. There is a foreigner with them. Who is the guy?’

‘Hello, Molly and Jack, I am sorry we are late. My car had something wrong on the way. I couldn’t restart it and gave it up taking a taxi.’ Steven apologizes before taking a seat. ‘Let me introduce my friend, David. He is from the United States. He comes here to teach English. I knew him when I was in the States. At that time he taught me English gratis. I am very grateful to him. I know you’re learning English, Jack. I take him here to talk with you in English. I told him that he wouldn’t feel alone at the dinner because all the attendants are able to speak English. You should make use of the chance, Jack. Ha-ha-ha, you see, I won’t have a free dinner, will I? I never receive a reward without making a merit. Nobody here is allowed to speak Chinese from now on.’

‘You’re so excited this evening, Steven, as if a chatterbox. Would you please let us have a chance to greet one another?’ Molly chuckles.

‘I am sorry. Now, David, this is Molly and don’t covet her who is taken by someone. He is the man, Jack.’ Steven is really long-winded this evening.

‘How do you do, both of you, I am glad to know you and please give me your support and consideration.’ David is as long-winded as Steven.

‘How do you do, David, please sit down, and you too, Pearl. You’re as quiet as a fish, little girl.’ Molly doesn’t decline to shoulder the responsibility to greet the other two guests on behalf of Jack.

‘Thank you, Molly. How are you both?’ Pearl says smiling.

‘We’re fine, thank you, little girl. Where did you go to spend your honeymoon?’ Molly is concerned about the topic like that. How eager she is to get married! Wish it not be bitter wine she brews herself.

‘We have been to the United States for a month during which we met David and lived in his house. David is very hospitable. He drove us to many resorts including Hollywood, the Golden Bridge and Las Vegas. We had a wonderful time.’

‘I admire you very much, little girl. Jack, I intend to go to America.’ She suddenly interposes such an issue.

‘I promise you, baby. We will visit the United States next year. Are you content?’ Jack knows he can’t elude if he doesn’t placate her now.

‘It is too late. Why don’t we go there next month? I want the time to be next month but not next year.’ She actually insists on her opinion.

‘Let’s discuss the issue when we are at home, will you? We’d better receive our guests now. You forget it?’ He nearly loses his temper.

‘What do we have, Jack?’ Pearl strikes in to pacify them.

‘Steven, make you at home to order what you like to eat and you too, David.’ Jack takes a chance to shift the topic.

‘David, is this your first time coming to China?’ Jack wants to make a conversation.

‘Yes, it is. I intend to stay here for several years to learn Chinese. I was told that it is difficult to learn Chinese. Is it true?’

‘It depends on what country one comes from. If you were Japanese it would have been easy for you. It also depends on one’s innate condition. Someone is an innate foreign language learner.’

‘Wow, you sound like a foreign language teacher, Jack. I am sure you know something about learning Chinese.’ David is happy to meet a man who gets along well with him.

‘You think highly of me. I just learned this from an English teacher who is Chinese. It is pity that he is too busy to teach you.’

‘It doesn’t matter. I can learn from you, Jack. You needn’t teach me every day. Tell me your experiences when you’re free. It is the greatest support to me.’

‘Ok, when I am free I will visit you and talk more.’ Jack intends to end the conversation to get to business with Steven. ‘Steven, how is your business?’

‘Not very well I am afraid.’ He doesn’t hide the truth.

‘What’s the matter with it? Can I help you?’ Jack wants to know more about the business.

‘I am afraid you can’t. You know, the factory needs money to expand its scale to cut down the cost. If the cost is not slashed the price won’t be lowered. It is a chain of issues unless someone is willing to invest another two million.’ His point of view is the same as John’s.

‘What is your production now?’ Jack makes a further probing.

‘We intend to produce five hundred sets annually. But six months passed and we have just produced twenty, as few as nothing. I am afraid it bodes ill rather than well.’
