 ‘Hello, who is that speaking?’ He asks.

‘Is that Mr. Jack speaking?’ A strange voice says.

‘Yes, this is Jack speaking. What is the matter?’ He is puzzled.

‘This is traffic police station. I am Mr. Zhang, a traffic policeman. I am sorry to notify you that your girlfriend encountered a serious traffic accident after drinking. She is now in the hospital, No. 1 hospital. You must come to the hospital as soon as possible. She is dying.’

‘Yes, I will be there soon. Thank you, sir.’ Jack feels his head being hit by a stick and collapses in a chair. But he has no time to think more and rushes out the house to drives the car. He nearly forgets to tell the information to Pearl.

‘Hello, Pearl, I had bad news about Molly. She is in hospital now. She is dying.’ He wants to cry if he continues to speak. But he can’t cry because he hears Pearl’s crying. ‘What is the matter with you, Pearl? Why are you crying?’

‘你好，哪位？’他问。

‘It is over there. Go along this corridor until the fifth door. There is a sign on the door. You can’t miss it.’

‘Thank you.’ Jack rushes to the room where he finds a policeman. ‘I am Jack. I am the victim’s boyfriend.’ He makes a self-introduction to the policeman.

‘Does she have any lineage relatives here?’ The policeman asks.

‘I am sorry there is not but me though I am not her blood relative. Her father is far from here in Hunan province. It is too late to inform him. I can deal with it on behalf of him. I am her fiance and she is the fiancée of mine, sir.’

‘护士，交通事故受伤的患者在哪儿？’杰克一跑进医院就大声喊道。

‘女的在急救室，男的在太平间。’值班的护士答道。

‘急救室在哪儿？’

‘在那边，这个走廊往前走，第五个门，门上有标识，很好找。’

‘谢谢，’杰克径自跑过去，看见一个警察站在那里。‘我叫杰克，是患者的男友。’

‘她在这里没有直系亲属吗？’警察问道。

‘没有，只有我一个，但不是她的血缘亲戚。她父亲在湖南，来不及找他。我可以代表他处理她的事情，我是她的未婚夫，她是我的未婚妻。’

We immediately call One Two Zero for help. Then we are here. Your fiancée is in the first aid room now. We found that both she and Steven drank a lot. We are sure that your fiancée drove in tipsy state. This is my card. You can contact me tomorrow or later to listen to the result of investigation. Now you can ask the doctor for the permission to see your fiancée. Good-bye.’ The policeman goes away.

Jack rushes into the first aid room as soon as the policeman disappears.

‘Who are you? Why do you rush into the room without knocking on the door?’ There is a doctor in the room who was not seen by Jack.

‘I am sorry. I am the patient’s fiance. I want to see my fiancée. Is she all right?’

‘I am afraid she isn’t.’

‘Can I talk to my fiancée?’

‘No, you can’t. I am sorry she has not come to herself. She is in a deep coma. You can talk to her when she regains consciousness. You can wait here quietly until she comes to herself. Don’t make noise, will you? You can press this button when anything happens to her.’ The doctor goes away.

He sits down beside her bed with his head in his hands. He wants to cry but he dare not. He is afraid the doctor will drive him out. He sobs quietly. He wants to wash his repenting off with the tear. He speaks to himself. God, Lord, please bless her. I will marry her as soon as she recovers no matter what happens. 警察刚一离开，杰克就冲进急救室。

‘你是哪位？干嘛不敲门就闯进来？’房间里有个大夫，杰克刚才没注意到。

‘对不起，大夫，我是患者的未婚夫，我要看看她，她没事儿吧？’

‘她的伤势很严重。’

‘我能跟她说话吗？’

 ‘不行，她还处于昏迷状态，深度昏迷。等她醒过来再说吧。你在这儿静静地坐着，等她醒过来。不许吵醒她，听到了吗？有什么情况就按这个钮。’大夫说完走了。

杰克终于有机会看看她了。茉莉从头到脚裹着绷带，连胳膊也缠上了绷带，只能看见她的眼睛，鼻子和嘴，一头漂亮的长发也不见了。病房里死一般寂静，只能听见治疗仪器的卡卡声。他在床边坐下，双手蒙住脸，想大哭一场，却害怕被大夫赶出去。只好默默地哭泣，想用伤心的眼泪洗去心头的悔恨。他自言自语地说：上帝啊，天主啊，救救她吧。只要她活过来，我马上就和她结婚，一切都可以不管不顾；只要她能活过来，不管爹妈反对与否，我都会跟她结婚。茉莉，快回来吧，我在等你。别离我而去，剩下我一个人怎么过啊，我一定娶你为妻，我已经下定决心。茉莉……’

‘Jack, are you there?’ A weak voice comes.

‘Ah, Molly, baby, you wake up. Thank goodness. You wake up at last. I must call the doctor to look at you.’ He presses the button.

The doctor comes immediately checking Molly’s condition. His countenance becomes severe. He whispers to Jack to ask him to go out with him.

‘Your fiancée’s condition of the injury is too serious. I am sorry to remind you of considering her funeral affairs. Now you can talk with her for a short time. She may die at any time. I am afraid she has something to tell you.’

Jack feels faint when he hears the news. He has to gather himself together to come into the room and sits down at the bed. He puts her hand in his and says tenderly.

‘Molly, darling, are you all right?’

杰克差点儿晕过去，他强打精神进了病房，坐在她旁边，握住她的小手，温存地说：

‘茉莉，亲爱的，你好些了吗？’
