I have just finished reading an English novel called “Tess of the U’urbevilles” which was written by Thomas Hardy, who was a famous novelist and poet in England. The dramatis personae—Tess, has become one of the most charming female image in the literature gallery of the world. She is the symbol of beauty and the embodiment of love. She has independent self-esteem, persevere will and passionate feelings in addition to her loyalty, purity and fascinating temperament.
Tess lived in a picturesque countryside. Though her life was hard, she was positive and bravely faced all the difficulties. After the death of the old horse, there was nothing to support the family, so she had to go to the D’urbeviilles’ to claim kinship, unwillingly, just for her family’s problem. Her miserable life just started.
Because of her baby act and lack of experience, she was attainted by Alec. She then lost the virtue of maiden and was regarded as a wanton sinner. Sad and hopeless, she went to another farm, in order to evade public opinion and to forget her unfortunate experience. Then she met another important man, Angel Clare, who also changed her life. Clare was absolutely different from Alec. He was born in a clergy family, but he preferred to farming and wanted to be an owner of a big farm. He would like to marry with a farm girl, rather than a rich lady. Just because of Tess’s unique purity, Clare fell in love with her and proposed to her. Tess loved him wholeheartedly but she didn’t accept at fist because of her miserable past. She didn’t want to hurt her lover. When Angel said to her that he would forgive her whatever she did, Tess was so moved and passionate that she accept the proposal eventually.
The power of love isn’t always intense. On the wedding night, when Tess confess all she had experienced in the past frankly, Angel hesitated and chose to leave. Tess’s heart broke. When she dared to let her wound unfolded before her lover, she hoped for understand and mercy. The power of love didn’t lead her to find a new start of life, in contrast, the one who was closest to her pushed her to the cliff ruthlessly. What a pity!
At last Angel realized the true meaning of love after a series of tribulation and regretted what he had done to Tess, and he returned to look for Tess. Tess then killed Alec in order to defend her love. She spent the last few days with Angel happily but what waited for her was punished. I feel very sorry for Tess.
Tess is tough and sentimental. Her fate is irreversible. If she was given one more chance, I believe she would choose to do the same thing. The drop scene of Tess can be no more than misery.
Love is grand. Love is self-giving. If you love somebody from the bottom of your heart, you should accept her past, because this is a part of her, or you will never go into her heart, which loves you so deeply. Because of love, our hearts can be as wide as sea, as selfless as sky. Love, is the sole reason we live in this world.
My dear friend, are you willing to sacrifice whatever for your lover? Are you willing to accept the past of your lover, whatever they are.
Perhaps you will hesitate. So, don’t be anxious to answer it. Please read the book—Tess of the U’urbevilles. Then I’m sure you will find the key.
