Out on the road the jeep already waiting. As I got on beside him, he sat up and started the engine. In a few minutes we were out of the town and heading with great speed in the direction of Bacalar. My hat blew away but when I asked him to stop, he refused. We were being followed by spies and it was necessary to drive fast to throw them off.
The hard and unsmooth surface of the road made the jeep weave. To the danger of being shot off the bank was added the discomfort, the cold, for at the speed we were travelling the air cut through my cotton shirt and trousers. I asked the driver to go slower, adding as an excuse that I wanted to look out for wild animals. He replied that the faster we drove the better our chance of coming up with them before they could run away. He had hardly spoken when the jeep struck a rain - filled pit, which splashed a sheet of muddy water over the windscreen. Blinded, he stopped the jeep with one wheel over the bank. When we got going again it was at a speed little faster than a walking pace.

It doesn’t matter when or how much a person sleeps, but everyone needs some rest to stay alive. That’s what all doctors thought, until they heard about Al Herpin. Al Herpin, it was said ,never slept. Could this be true ? The doctors decided to see this strange man themselves.
Al Herpin was 90 years old when the doctors came to his home in New Jersey. They thought for sure that he got some sleep of some kind. So they stayed with him and watched every movement he made. But they were surprised. Though they watched him hour after hour and day after day. They never saw Herpin sleeping. In fact, he did not even own a bed. He never needed one.
The only rest that Herpin sometimes got was sitting in a comfortable chair and reading newspapers. The doctors were puzzled by this strange continuous sleeplessness. They found only one answer that might explain his condition. Herpin remembered some talk about his mother having been injured several days before he was born. But that was all. Was this the real reason ? No one could be sure.

My husband and children think they are very lucky that they are living and that it’s Christmas again. They can’t see that we live on a dirty street in a dirty house among people who aren’t much good. But Johnny and children can’t see this. What a pity it is that our neighbours have to make happiness out of all this dirt. I decided that my children must get out this. The money that we’ve saved isn’t nearly enough.
The McGaritys have money but they are so proud. The look down upon the poor. The McGarity girl just yesterday stood out there in the street eating from a bag of candy(糖果)while a ring of hungry children watched her. I saw those children looking at her and crying in their hearts; and when she couldn’t eat any more she threw the rest down the sewer(下水道). Why, is it only because they have money ? There is more to happiness than money in the world, isn’t there?

Miss Jackson who teaches at he Settlement House isn’t rich, but she knows things. She understands people. Her eyes look straight into yours when she talks with you. She can read your mind. I’d like to see the children be like Miss Jackson when they grow up.

According to the stereotype(常规), blue-collar workers are men with little formal education who use their muscles instead of their brains to earn a living, like Archie Bunker of television’s all in the family. They come home from work, open a can of beer, sit down and start complaining(抱怨)about work, money and demands made by small groups.
This stereotype , which has wide acceptance, is unfair. Bluecollar workers have to use both mind and body, and often their jobs require a good deal of knowledge and skill. They usually go straight to work after high school. If they want more education, they get it by themselves, not through support of families or scholarships(奖学金).
If blue-collar workers complain, there are some good reasons. Bosses tell them that they are laborers with the highest pay in history. But they look around and see that the gap(差距)between the rich and the poor is wider than ever. they feel that the government has paid little attention to them and consider themselves forgotten men.
68. The main idea of the passage is that ______.
A. blue-collar workers are not treated fairly

C. bosses refuse to give them high pay
