抽象名词未必“玄”

 

“介词with/on/by + 抽象名词”（= 相应的副词）表示与该抽象名词同意义的副词的意义。例如：
1. The soldiers marched twenty miles with ease.（= easily）
   士兵们很容易地进军20公里。
2. Somebody left the window open on purpose.（= purposely）
   有人故意让窗子开着。
“all + 抽象名词”（= very + 该抽象名词的形容词）可用来加强语气。例如：
1. I am all astonishment.（= very much astonished）
   我极其惊诧。
2. He is all diligence.（= very diligent）
   他确是非常勤奋。
3. Jane was all eagerness to hear the end of the story. （= very eager）
   珍妮极其渴望听到故事的结尾。
4. Please go on, I'm all attention.（= very attentive）
   请继续说下去，我在倾听。
“抽象名词 + itself”（= very + 该抽象名词相应的形容词）可用来加强语气，其语势比very更强。例如：
1. She is beauty itself.（= very beautiful）
   她非常美丽。
2. Li is courage itself.（= very courageous）
   李浑身是胆。
3. She is kindness itself.（= very kind）
   她确实非常仁慈。
4. He is diligence itself.（= very diligent）
   他真是非常勤奋。
“have + the + 抽象名词 + 动词不定式”（= be + 形容词 + 动词不定式）表示“如此……以致……”。例如：
1. How dare you have the imprudence to say that?（= be so impudent as to say that.）
   你竟敢如此无礼说出那种话来。
2. Did she have the cheek to ask for more money?（= was she cheeky enough to ask for...）
   她竟厚颜无耻要更多的钱吗？
3. He had the kindness to show me the way to the station.（= was so kind as to show...）
   他很和蔼地给我指引去车站的路。
上述不定式也可用“of + 动名词”代替。例如：
4. He had the temerity of asking for higher wages after only three days' work.
   仅仅工作了三天，他就冒失地要更高的工资。
“of + 抽象名词”（= 相应的形容词）用作后置定语时，相当于与该抽象名词相应的形容词做前置定语的意义和功能。例如：
1. My secretary is a man of tack.（= tactful）
   我的秘书是个机灵的人。
2. Problems of importance are handled in earnest.（= important）
   重要的问题在认真处理。
3. The English-Chinese dictionary is of great use to students.（= very useful）
   这本英汉词典对学生大有用途。
“冠词 + 抽象名词”或“抽象名词复数形式”（= 普通名词）可表示特定的人或事。例如：
1. They denied the possibility of his success.
   他们不相信他有成功的可能。
2. I have received many kindnesses from him.
   他对我非常和蔼。
3. At the dinner party, all hs relations were invited.
   所有他的亲朋好友都被邀参加宴会。
