fade to black [META llic]年在美国加利弗利亚开始组建,之后在The Recycler杂志上发广告,招募贝斯手和主音吉他,后来招到贝斯手Ron McGovney,并且有多名吉他手前来试听,比如Lloyd Grant, Brad Parker和Jeff Warner,但都没有进入乐队,乐队前期还缺少一个强力的主音吉他手.乐队名Metallica是由Lars取得,此前Lars的一位朋友Ron Quintana要创办摇滚杂志,拿出一列备选杂志让Lars建议一个,其中就有一个名字叫Metallica,Lars建议用Metal Mania或Hesse,而后来Lars则用Metallica作为乐队的名字.
Metallica早期创作灵感来自Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Motorhead, Diamond Head, Saxon,Thin Lizzy, Mercyful Fate以及其他乐队,并且还受一些朋克乐队影响,例如the Misfits, Zeroption和The Ramones以及英国Hardcore乐队Discharge.
1982年早些时候,Metallica为了让Hit the Lights能收录Metal Blade's Brian Slagel的第一张合辑Metal Massacre中,Lars Ulrich四处寻找合适的主音吉他,不久Lars Ulrich通过当地报纸联系到了来自加利弗利亚Huntington Beach的Dave Mustaine,Dave Mustaine成为了Metallica的主音吉他手.
1982年3月到4月份间,由主唱间吉他James Hetfield,主音吉他Dave Mustaine,贝斯手Ron McGovney,鼓手Lars Ulrich组成的Metallica在Ron McGovney的车库Ron's Garage中录制了几首小样,其中包括了Hit The Lights以及Power Metal,几个月后乐队完整录制好一张专辑No Life 'Til Leather,并且受到了受到了地下摇滚乐刊的好评,不久乐队又完成一张现场Demo叫做Metal Up Your Ass.
过了几年,Ron McGovney离开乐队,Metallica希望Trauma的贝斯手Cliff Burton能够加入Metallica乐队,Cliff表示如果乐队能迁到他的家乡Castro Valley的话,他就加入Metallica,James和Lars同意了该条件,于是Cliff Burton顺利成为Metallica一员.Cliff加入后,乐队录制了Megaforce.
1983年,Metallica来到纽约,并与Marsha Zazula成立的Megaforce Records签约,这个时候Dave Mustaine由于吸毒以及酗酒被乐队开除,来自Exodus的吉他手Kirk Hammett顶替Dave Mustaine成为Metallica的主音吉他手,被乐队开除后的Dave Mustaine则自立门户,组建了自己的乐队Megadeth.
