P.S. I Love You is a 2007 American drama film directed by Richard LaGravenese. The screenplay by LaGravenese and Steven Rogers is adapted from the 2004 novel of the same name by Cecelia Ahern. The film was shot on location in New York City and County Wicklow, Ireland. It is dedicated to the memory of producer Molly Smith's sister Windland Smith Rice.

Holly (Hilary Swank) and Gerry Kennedy (Gerard Butler) are a married couple who live on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. They fight almost everyday until Gerry dies suddenly of a brain tumor. Deeply distraught, Holly withdraws from her family and friends until they descend upon her on her 30th birthday. They are determined to force the young widow to face the future and decide what her next career move should be.

As they rally around Holly and help organize her apartment, a cake is delivered, and on it is a message from Gerry. It proves to be the first of several, which all ending with the sign-off P. S. I Love You. Gerry arranged to have delivered to her after his death. As the seasons pass, each new message fills her with encouragement and sends her on a new adventure. While Holly's mother Patricia (Kathy Bates) and her best friends Denise (Lisa Kudrow) and Sharon (Gina Gershon ) are concerned Gerry's letters are keeping Holly tied to the past, they are in fact pushing her into the future. With Gerry's words as her guide, Holly slowly embarks on a journey of rediscovery.

Gerry pre-arranged for Holly, Denise, and Sharon to travel to his homeland of Ireland, and while there they meet William (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), a singer who strongly reminds Holly of her deceased husband and coincidentally was his childhood friend. During the vacation, Denise announces she's engaged and Sharon reveals she's pregnant, and the news causes Holly to relapse emotionally and once again withdraw into herself.

Holly eventually enrolls in a fashion course and discovers she has a flair for designing women's shoes. A newfound self-confidence allows her to emerge from her solitude and embrace her friends' happiness. While on a walk with her mother, she learns that her mother was the one that Gerry asked to deliver his letters after his death. She decides to take her mother on a trip to Ireland, and as the film ends the audience is left with the notion that Holly has opened herself up to the journey that the rest of her life will be, and wherever it takes her. She finally abandons her fear of falling in love.

The film was shot on location in New York City and County Wicklow, Ireland.

Jeffrey Dean Morgan (as William Gallagher) had to learn to play the guitar for his part in this film in a very short time. His guitar instructor was Nancy Wilson of the band Heart. Morgan was thrilled to take lessons from her because, in his own words, "I had such a crush on her as a kid."

The film opened on 2,454 screens in the US and earned $6,481,221 and ranked #6 on its opening weekend. It eventually grossed $53,695,808 at the US box office and $91,370,273 internationally for a total worldwide box office of $145,066,081.

The whole letter to sent to Gerry's Mom & Dad in Ireland says: "Dear Mum & Dad. Well, Doc says there's not much time so I thought I'd write to you, seeing how bad we Kennedys are with modern day contraptions like telephones. Tell Dad to not lay about and to take care of his legs-keep them walking. I always thing of Dad walking across the farm yelling after the hands too lazy to keep the chickens fed. And you Mum, yelling at Dad to treat the boys with a Father's hand, not a father's belt. I remember everything Mum. And I thank you for giving me a mother's breath of life and love. No son ever loved a mother more, I can tell you that. Never could say it to your face. Nor to Dad. But I love you."

Gerry Kennedy: Dear Holly, I don't have much time. I don't mean literally, I mean you're out buying ice cream and you'll be home soon. But I have a feeling this is the last letter, because there is only one thing left to tell you. It isn't to go down memory lane or make you buy a lamp, you can take care of yourself without any help from me. It's to tell you how much you move me, how you changed me. You made me a man, by loving me Holly. And for that, I am eternally grateful... literally. If you can promise me anything, promise me that whenever you're sad, or unsure, or you lose complete faith, that you'll try to see yourself through my eyes. Thank you for the honor of being my wife. I'm a man with no regrets. How lucky am I. You made my life, Holly. But I'm just one chapter in yours. There'll be more. I promise. So here it comes, the big one. Don't be afraid to fall in love again. Watch out for that signal, when life as you know it ends. P.S. I will always love you.

When Holly is drinking with William in the kitchen in Ireland, her drink amount changes from when the camera is facing her to when it is facing William.

When Holly and her friends are in the boat and they all have their life vests inflated, when Holly's first opens, the blow pin cap is off. In the next scene that zooms in on her face, the cap is on.

In the boat scene, when the girls are being rescued and the image is a long-shot, you can see a cable keeping the boat steady. This is not an anchor, because they spoke about drifting to the shore.

The film is not a beautiful object or a memorable cultural one, and yet it charms, however awkwardly.
