Gary Sinise as Lt. Dan Taylor, Gump and Bubba's platoon leader during the Vietnam War, then later serves as Bubba's replacement at The Bubba-Gump Shrimping Company. Although Gump saves his life in battle, his legs are amputated because of a severe injury, and he blames Forrest for robbing him of his destiny, as one of his direct ancestors had died in every previous American war, whereas he survived this war. After several years of depression, he later thanks Forrest and joins him in running the shrimping business. Also at Forrest's wedding, he shows Forrest his new titanium alloy legs and introduces Forrest to his fiancée, Susan.

Mykelti Williamson as Benjamin Buford "Bubba" Blue, Gump's friend whom he meets upon joining the Army. Throughout filming, Williamson wore a lip attachment to create Bubba's protruding lip.

Peter Dobson as Elvis Presley, a house guest Gump encounters.

Plot
s

Forrest Gump (Tom Hanks), sitting at a bus stop in Savannah, Georgia, tells the story of his life to a woman seated next to him. The listeners at the bus stop change regularly throughout his narration, each showing a different attitude ranging from disbelief and indifference to fascination and enthrallment.

It starts out in 1981 (present day) in the film as shown by a new car advertisement on a bus. On his first day of school, Forrest meets a girl named Jenny Curran, with whom he forms a strong friendship. Forrest and Jenny spend all their time together, and Jenny defends Forrest from a group of rather-cowardly school bullies. Despite his below-average intelligence quotient (IQ), Forrest's ability to run gets him a football scholarship at the University of Alabama, where he plays under the legendary coach Paul "Bear" Bryant. After his college graduation, he enlists in the army, where he makes friends with a man named Bubba, who talks of nothing but his family shrimping business, and convinces Forrest to go into the business with him when the war is over, splitting the profits 50-50. They are sent to Vietnam and are both assigned to the 9th Infantry Division. During an ambush, Bubba is killed in action.

h

Forrest ends up saving some of his platoon, including his platoon leader, Second Lieutenant Dan Taylor, who loses both his legs as a result of injuries. Forrest repeatedly returns to the front line to retrieve his platoon members and carry them to safety, actions which earn him a Medal of Honor for his heroism. While he is rewarded for his actions however Forrest is resented by Lieutenant Dan, who felt his destiny was to die honorably in battle, rather than live as a cripple. Forrest tells Lieutenant Dan of his plans to one day be a shrimp boat captain. Lieutenant Dan responds with sarcasm, saying that if Forrest ever became the captain of a shrimp boat, he would be his first mate.

g

While Forrest is in recovery for a gunshot wound to his buttocks, he discovers his uncanny ability for ping-pong, eventually gaining popularity and rising to celebrity status, and later playing ping-pong competitively against Chinese teams in ping pong diplomacy. He is subsequently promoted to sergeant. At an anti-war rally in Washington, D.C., Sergeant Gump is reunited with Jenny, who has been living a hippie counterculture lifestyle. Forrest witnesses Jenny being slapped across the face by her boyfriend and responds by attacking him, but Jenny convinces Forrest to leave him alone. They walk together all night talking before Jenny leaves on a bus in the morning while Forrest meets John Lennon on a talk show.

f

Returning home, Forrest is encouraged by his mother to endorse a company which makes ping-pong paddles, earning himself $25,000. Thinking of his promise to Bubba, he uses the money to buy a shrimping boat, which he names after Jenny, who is shown snorting cocaine, and at one point, attempting to jump off of her room's balcony. Lieutenant Dan, who is warming to Forrest, keeps his promise to join him as his first mate; although they initially have little success, In 1974 Hurricane Carmen leaves theirs the only shrimping boat in operation, yielding immense catches. They use their income to buy an entire fleet of shrimp boats. Dan invests the money in Apple Computer and Forrest is left financially secure for the rest of his life, also donating half of the money to Bubba's family. After hearing that his mother is seriously ill he returns home to spend her remaining time with him.

k

One day, Jenny returns to visit Forrest and live with him in his family home, which he now owns. After they have lived together for some time he asks her to marry him. She declines, although later joins him in his room and spends the night with him, leaving the next morning before he wakes. Despondent at the fact that Jenny has left him yet again, Forrest elects to go for a run. He decides to keep running, eventually crossing the country several times over the course of three and a half years, becoming famous and accumulating a large following in the process.

i

In present-day, Forrest reveals that he is waiting at the bus stop because he received a letter from Jenny who, having seen him run on television, asks him to visit her. Once he is reunited with Jenny, she introduces him to his son, also named Forrest. Jenny tells Forrest she is suffering from a virus. Together the three move back to Greenbow, Alabama. Jenny and Forrest finally marry but she dies soon afterwards. The film ends in 1983 with father and son waiting for the school bus on little Forrest's first day back to school.

Production
Script
k

The film is based on the 1986 novel by Winston Groom. Both center around the character of Forrest Gump. However, the film primarily focuses on the first eleven chapters of the novel, before skipping ahead to the end of the novel with the founding of Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. and the meeting with Forrest, Jr. In addition to skipping some parts of the novel, the film adds several aspects to Gump's life that do not occur in the novel, such as his needing leg braces as a child and his run across the country.

Winston Groom was paid $350,000 for the screenplay rights to his novel Forrest Gump and was contracted for a 3% share of the film's net profits. However, Paramount and the film's producers did not pay him, using Hollywood accounting to posit that the blockbuster film lost money—a claim belied by the fact that Tom Hanks contracted for points instead of a salary, and he and director Zemeckis each netted $40 million. Additionally, no one saw fit to mention Groom's name in any of the film's six Oscar-winner speeches.

Casting
k

John Travolta was the original choice to play the title role, and admits passing on the role was a mistake. Bill Murray was also considered for the role. Hanks revealed that he signed onto the film after an hour and a half of reading the script. He initially wanted to ease Gump's pronounced Southern accent, but was eventually persuaded by director Bob Zemeckis to portray the heavy accent stressed in the novel. Michael Conner Humphreys portrayed the young Forrest Gump.

David Alan Grier, Ice Cube, and Dave Chappelle were all offered Benjamin Buford "Bubba" Blue before turning it down. Chappelle claimed he believed the film would be unsuccessful and has also admitted that he regrets not taking the role.Tupac Shakur had read for the part, and saw the movie in theatres with then-girlfriend Keisha Morris.

Cavett played the 1970s version of himself, with make-up applied to make him appear younger. Consequently, Cavett is the only well-known figure in the film to play a cameo rather than be represented through the use of archival footage

Filming
l

Filming began in August 1993 and ended four months later in December. Although the majority of the film is set in Alabama, filming took place mainly in Beaufort, South Carolina, as well as parts of North Carolina. The Gump family home set was built in Savannah, Georgia and the nearby land was used to film Curran's home as well as some of the Vietnam scenes. Over 20 palm trees were planted to improve the Vietnam scenes. Forrest Gump narrated his life's story in Chippewa Square as he sat at a bus stop bench. Throughout filming, Williamson wore a lip attachment to create Bubba's protruding lip.

Highlight
h

Ken Ralston and his team at Industrial Light & Magic were responsible for the film's visual effects. Using CGI techniques, it was possible to depict Gump meeting now deceased presidents and shaking their hands. Hanks was first shot against a blue screen along with reference markers so that he could line up with the archive footage. To record the voices of the historical figures, voice doubles were hired. To ensure that the voices matched when the person spoke, special effects were used to alter the mouth movements. Archival footage was used and with the help of techniques like chroma key, warping, morphing, and rotoscoping, Hanks was integrated into it.

The scene where Forrest spots Jenny at a peace rally at the Lincoln Memorial and Reflecting Pool in Washington, D.C., required visual effects to create the large crowd of people. Over two days of filming, approximately 1,500 extras were used. At each successive take, the extras were rearranged and moved into a different quadrant away from the camera. With the help of computers, the extras were multiplied to create a crowd of several hundred thousand people.

g

The CGI removal of actor Gary Sinise's legs, after his character had them amputated, was achieved by wrapping his legs with a blue fabric, which later facilitated the work of the "roto-paint"-team to paint out his legs from every single frame. At one point, while hoisting himself into his wheelchair, his legs are used for support.

In one Vietnam War scene, Gump carries a wounded Bubba away from an incoming napalm attack. To create the effect, stunt actors were initially used for compositing purposes. Then Hanks and Williamson were filmed, with Williamson supported by a cable wire as Hanks ran with him. The explosion was then filmed, and the actors were digitally added to appear just in front of the explosions. The jet fighters and napalm canisters were also added by CGI.

Release
k

Produced on a budget of $55 million, Forrest Gump opened in 1,595 theaters in its first weekend of domestic release, earning $24,450,602. The film placed first in the weekend's box office, narrowly beating The Lion King, which was in its fourth week of release. For the first ten weeks of its release, the film held the number one position at the box office.

Released in the United States on July 6, 1994, Forrest Gump was well received by critics and became a commercial success as the top grossing film in North America released that year. The film ended up earning over $677 million worldwide during its theatrical run.

h

The film took 66 days to surpass $250 million and was the fastest grossing Paramount film to pass $100 million, $200 million, and $300 million in box office receipts (at the time of its release). The film had gross receipts of $329,694,499 in the U.S. and Canada and $347,693,217 in international markets for a total of $677,387,716 worldwide. As of July 2009, the film is ranked as the 18th highest grossing domestic film and 32nd worldwide.

Soundtrack
d

The 32-song soundtrack from the film was released on July 6, 1994. The soundtrack includes songs from Elvis Presley, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Aretha Franklin, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Jimi Hendrix, The Doors, The Mamas And The Papas, The Doobie Brothers, Bob Seger, and Buffalo Springfield, among others.

Music producer Joel Sill reflected on compiling the soundtrack: "We wanted to have very recognizable material that would pinpoint time periods, yet we didn't want to interfere with what was happening cinematically." The two-disc album has a variety of music from the 1950s–1980s performed by American artists. According to Sills, this was due to Zemeckis' request, "All the material in there is American. Bob (Zemeckis) felt strongly about it. He felt that Forrest wouldn't buy anything but American."

The soundtrack reached a peak of second place on the Billboard charts. The soundtrack went on to sell twelve million copies, and is one of the top selling albums in the United States. The score for the film was composed and conducted by Alan Silvestri and released on August 2, 1994.

Drill Sergeant: Gump! What's your sole purpose in this army?
Forrest Gump: To do whatever you tell me, drill sergeant!
Drill Sergeant: God damn it, Gump! You're a god damn genius! This is the most outstanding answer I have ever heard. You must have a goddamn I.Q. of 160. You are goddamn gifted, Private Gump. Listen up, people...
Forrest Gump: Now for some reason I fit in the army like one of them round pegs. It's not really hard. You just make your bed real neat and remember to stand up straight and always answer every question with "Yes, drill sergeant."
Drill Sergeant: ...Is that clear?
Forrest Gump: Yes, drill sergeant!

Mistakes

Reception
Critics
j

"The screenplay by Eric Roth has the complexity of modern fiction...(Hanks') performance is a breathtaking balancing act between comedy and sadness, in a story rich in big laughs and quiet truths....what a magical movie."

—Roger Ebert of Chicago Sun-Times

"(The film) has been very well worked out on all levels, and manages the difficult feat of being an intimate, even delicate tale played with an appealingly light touch against an epic backdrop."

—Todd McCarthy of Variety

"(The film) reduces the tumult of the last few decades to a virtual-reality theme park: a baby-boomer version of Disney's America."

—Owen Gordinier of Entertainment Weekly

Filmgoers
j

believe everyone has a right to their opinion about films or other topics. However from a lot of the comments I have read about this film, I do not think many got the gist of the message from the author and the film maker.

This film is a great modern fable, a fable in the dictionary is defined as a brief fictitious story that teaches a moral. There are many morals defined in this film but foremost is integrity and a simple goodness.
