Batten down the hatches means get ready for a big, crazy, loud storm-like event. Example: "A big rain storm is coming. We need to batten down the hatches." Another example: "Dad found out you broken the vase, and here he comes." Reply: "Batten down the hatches." Another example: "Here come's mom. She's going to see what you did." Reply: "Better batten down the hatches."
