digital camera battery

Most people born before the introduction of the digital camera into the commercial market are very familiar with the AA alkaline batteries. When it comes to batteries used for providing power to portable devices, the alkaline cells were the most highly preferred decades ago. And then came the battery packs for mobile phones and digital cameras in the 1990s.

Today, the lithium-ion or Li-ion battery pack is considered to be the most advanced. This is the rechargeable type that possesses great features not found in the alkaline cells, in the nickel metal hydride or NiMh type or in the nickel cadmium which used to be the one commonly used for portable equipment.

The lithium battery was discovered way back in 1912 but the first non-rechargeable lithium batteries were sold commercially in the early part of the 1970s. Sony Corporation is credited for introducing the first lithium ion battery in the commercial market in 1991.

To those not aware yet, lithium is said to be the lightest form of metal with the highest electrochemical potential. In manufacturing the digital camera batteries, lithium is used in its pure metallic form. It's important to note, though, that lithium ion batteries are different from the plain lithium ones which are not rechargeable. It is only the lithium ion that is capable of being recharged for hundreds of times.

The lithium ion battery pack has several advantages over the other types. For one, it has more energy density compared to the regular nickel cadmium. It also has greater load capacity which enables it to provide more power to the digital camera in longer periods.

Recharging times for this type are longer. It can be recharged hundreds of times for about three to five hours at the most. And when fully charged, it does not easily discharge when used continuously or even when not installed in gadgets for several months. On the contrary, the NiMh and NiCd digital camera batteries lose a small percentage of their charge every day even when they are not in use.

Another edge of the lithium ion battery is its low maintenance. It requires no scheduled cycling and no memory in order to keep its power.

But other than its advantages, consumers should also learn about the disadvantages of this rechargeable digital camera battery even though there are only a few of them. One of these is its high cost. A lithium ion battery as well as its charger command a high price because of the complexity involved in creating it. Another reason for this is due to the fact that this type of battery is manufactured only is limited numbers compared to the NiMh and NiCd ones.

If you're using this type of digital camera battery, make sure to get the appropriate charger. As the shapes and sizes of the lithium ion battery vary, there's no standard charger http://www.all-good-batteries.com sony np-fm50 battery. It's best then to buy only the charger that fits the size of the one you have. Some brands also allow their li-ion battery pack to work with their same brand of chargers.
