① My View on Job-hopping
Directions: For this part, you are allowed thirty minutes to write a composition on
the topic My View on dob-hopping. You should write at least 120 words and you should base your
composition on the outline (given in Chinese) below:
1.有些人喜欢始终从事一种工作,因为……
2.有些人喜欢经常更换工作,因为……
3.我的看法。
My View on Job-hopping
People have different attitudes towards their work. Some prefer to stick to one occupation
as their lifelong career. These people are of the opinion that one can never do his work well
unless he is devoted to only one job in his lifetime. So if one changes his job frequently,
he will not get the necessary experience needed in his work.
Others, on the other hand, like to change their jobs at times. In their opinion, people work
in order to make more money. If they havea chance to get a better paid job, they will certainly
try to get this chance. Besides, if a person does only one job all his life, he will certainly
be bored with it.
My idea is that interest is the most important if one wants to excel others in his job. So if
a person is not interested in his job, job hopping is normal and even necessary. Otherwise,
he will suffer from his work, and inevitably, he is not likely to succeed in his career.
② Population to Be Curbed
Population to Be Curbed (A)
Nothing in today's world is as big a problem as that of population. People begin to worry
about the support capacity of the earth. And there might be only standing room for each person
in the future.
Lima's population was 5. 7 million in 1985 but it grew to 9. 1 million in 2000. Tianjin's was
7.9 million in 1985. In 2000, it boosted to 9. 7 million. Such cities as London, Osaka, Moscow,
Beijing, Karachi, Delhi, Jakarta, Seoul, and Teheran are having a similar population growth.
Calcutta, Shanghai, New York, and Sto Paulo see a faster population explosion. Tokyo had 18.8
million in 1985. In 2000 it turned into 20.2 million. Mexico city had 17.3 million people in
1985, but in 2000, its population reached 25.8 million!
What does the population growth mean? It means greater and greater consumption and greater
pressure for the earth. If more people are added to the world population without our being
alert or taking any action, we would have only standing room by the end of the 21st century.
Each government and the UN should see that population of each country and each city stops
growing for the next fifty years.
Sample for Band 6
Population to Be Curbed (B)
Everything grows in modern times, and it seems that nothing grows as quickly as population.
Population keeps growing, and grows rapidly, firstly because people's living standards keep
going up, with better houses, better clothing, better food, secondly because people know how
to preserve themselves so as to live longer, and thirdly
because they have modern medicine and medical care to ensure that usual diseases can be easily
cured. There is another cause for the growth of population. Few countries or governments have
realised the importance of family planning. On the contrary, some encourage child-birth.
Here are some examples of population growth from 1985 to 2000 (as anticipated).
Lima had 5.7 million people in 1985 but there were 9.1 million by 2000. Tianjin used to have
7. 9 million in 1985. By 2000 its population reached 9. 7 million. Such cities as London,
Osaka, Moscow, Beijing, Karachi, Delhi, Jakarta, Seoul, and Teheran are having a similar
population growth. We would not be shocked if all other cities have this rate. But some
cities, like Calcutta, Shanghai, New York, and Sto Paulo boost their population even more
quickly than the above-mentioned cities. Tokyo had 18.8 million in 1985. The year 2000 found 20.2 million Tokyo
citizens. Mexico city had 17.3 million people in 1985, but as population specialists had
predicted, that reached 25.8 million in 2000 !
The population problem is a universal concern nowadays. Any government is a failure if it
does nothing about its population growth.

[范文]
Human brain is the most complex and intelligent mechanism in the world. It is the major factor
that distinguishes man from animals. With our brain we get to know the world and make a good
use of the world to our benefit.
Our brain is a product of constant use through millions of years. Other things can be used up,
but used properly, our brain can never be exhausted. In fact, the more we use it, the more
capable and efficient it will become. Excessive use of the brain, however, will causea lot of
problems. So it is useful to know how to use our brain wisely.
First, handwork or physical labor is good exercise as well as rest for our brain. Doing handwork
and brain work alternatively can help develop both our brain and hands. Secondly, we should
avoid doing brainwork for long hours on end. The brain, though 3% of the body weight, when at
work, consumes 20% of the oxygen carried by 16% of the blood in circulation. A long period of
brainwork may cause, through lack of bodily activity, slow blood circulation and inadequate
oxygen supply to the brain, resulting in inefficiency and possible damage to the brain.
④ My View on Fake Commodities
Directions: For this part, you are allowed thirty minutes to write a composition on the topic
My View on Fake Commodities. You should write at least 120 words and you should base your
composition on the outline (given in Chinese) below:
1.假冒伪劣商品的危害;
2.怎样杜绝假冒伪劣商品。
My View on Fake Commodities
Fake commodities can be found, now and then, in the market, which has aroused a lot of public
attention. It is reported that these commodities range from foodstuff, clothes to radios,
and TV sets and even medicines.
Fake commodities are harmful in many ways. To begin with, they bring about great loss in both
properties and lives. For instance, if someone buys some fake medicines, it may not cure him
of his illness, on the contrary, it may probably make his illness worse or even put an end
to his life. Besides, fake commodities may impair the profit of the manufactures who produce
the real products by making the consumers suspicious of these products, thus causing social
problems.
There are many ways to get rid of fake commodities. First, laws should be enforced to punish
those who produce these products. Second, people should be advised how to tell the genuine
commodities from the fake ones. Moreover, people should not buy things just because they are
cheap and attractively advertised. Furthermore, they should be encouraged to report to the
relevant authorities in case they have bought a fake commodity. In a word, if the whole
society work together to solve this problem, I think fake commodities will have nowhere to exist
⑤ A Letter to the University Presiden
Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a composition on the topic
A Letter to the University President about the Canteen Service on Campus. You should write
at least 100 words and you should base your composition on the outline (given in Chinese) below:
假如你是李明,请你就本校食堂的状况给校长写一封信,内容应涉及食堂的饭菜质量、价格、环境、服务等,可以是表扬,可以是批评建议,也可以兼而有之。
A Letter to the University President about the Canteen Service on Campus
January 12th, 2002
Dear Mr. President,
I'm a student in our university. I am writing this letter to inform you of the canteen
service on our campus.
Generally speaking, we are not content with the canteen service in our university. The
reasons are as follows:
First, although quality of the dishes is not bad, yet, most of the dishes remain unchanged all
the year round. More and more students are complaining about eating the same food every day.
So I think variety of the food is the most urgent problem that should be solved.
Second, the environment is not the same as we desire. Many students always talk so loudly
that we can't enjoy our meals. So I suggest that there be some slogans on the wall to remind
them to be quiet, and some soft background music to help us relax.
By the way the canteen workers are very patient in providing us with the service. So I think
they should be given more incentive to offer us better service in the future.
The above mentioned are not just what I think, but the idea of many of my classmates'. We will
be very glad if you can take our suggestions into consideration.
Best wishes,
Yours Sincerely
