When Sam was a boy at school, his favourite lesson was art. As soon as he left school, he worked as a bookseller in a bookshop, but three times a week he went to evening classes in art, and when he had time, he liked to paint(v.绘画;n.油画颜料).
He painted in a very modem way. His pictures were hard to understand, such as (例如) women with three red eyes, large blank areas (空白的地区), and something like that.
After a few months he thought, "Perhaps I can sell some of my pictures and get enough money and become a real artist (画家). Then I can travel around as much as I like, and go to foreign museums, and see other artists' paintings, and study in other countries when I feel like it. I don't like life in a bookshop. I only enjoy painting."
One day in the bookshop, Sam met a man who owned a picture shop, and after talking with him, Sam asked him to his home to see some of his work. "Then perhaps you could tell me whether I can really be a good artist and get some money from my painting," Sam said hopefully.
The man said he would love to come and see what he thought of Sam' s work, so he arrived one evening at Sam' s home. Sam started to show him some of his pictures.
The man looked at them one after the other while Sam watched his face, but it seemed that the man was not interested in them.
Then, when he had finished, he looked around, and his glance(眼光) fell on something else. A happy look came over his face for the first time, and he said, "Now I like this one very much ! It's so full of deep feeling! I'm sure I could sell this one for you!"
"That," said Sam, "is the place where I clean the paint off my brushes."

Jane couldn't watch her favourite TV programmes because she worked at night. She decided to buy a VCR so that the VCR could record (录制)the TV programmes while she worked. When
she could watch them when she came home.
Jane was very happy the day she bought her VCR. She hurried home from the shop and, after an hour' s work, joined the VCR to the TV at last. Then she tried to programme(操作)the VCR to record a TV programme. Two hours later she was still trying. Jane didn't understand how to programme her VCR that day, or the next day. She never understood how to programme her VCR. "I'm just not good with machines," she thought.
Jane blamed(责备) herself when she couldn't programme her VCR. Dr Norman, the writer of The Design (设计)of Everyday Things, can't understand his VCR either. In his book he says that if people have trouble with the things they use every day, they shouldn't blame themselves. Instead, they should blame the design of these "everyday things".
The modem cooker(炊具), for example, is an everyday thing with a poor design. People often mm on the wrong bumer(灶眼), though the control buttons (控制键)are labeled(有......标识). Another everyday thing with a bad design is the digital(数字) watch. In the past, watches only told the time; now watches often have as many as 15 different features(功能). Can people really understand how to use all those features? Dr Norman says that a lot of people can' t. The problem, he says, is that a digital watch has only three control buttons.
Things like doors sometimes have poor designs, too. Have you ever had trouble opening a door? Have you ever pushed on a door that pulls open, or pulled on a door that pushes open? When you have trouble opening a door, it' s almost certainly because the door is poorly designed. Well designed doors tell people what to do.
What should people do about these everyday things that are poorly designed? "Don't buy them!" Dr Norman says. If you' re shopping for a VCR, ask the shopkeeper if you can try to programme it right in the shop. If you can' t programme that VCR, keep shopping until you find one you can programme. And don' t buy something just because it looks good. Washing machines, for example, often look very nice. They have more than ten control buttons to push; they look like they came from a spaceship, but can you understand how to work them? If people keep buying poorly designed things, Dr Norman says, factories will keep making them-and people will keep having trouble with everyday things.
( )51. When people can not work an everyday thing after trying hard, they don't think____________.
A. they are bright enough to use it
B. it has enough control buttons
C. it is well designed
D. they can understand the words on it
( )52. Here are four designs for a cooker. Which one do you think is the best?

( )53. What are good designs?
A. They make things have many different features.
B. They make things look like they came from a spaceship.
C. They make people use everyday things easily.
D. They make people understand instructions without any trouble.
