Cease and desist is a formal way to say "stop doing that". Example: Police officer says: "Sir, I want you to cease and desist from what you are doing."

Cease and desist means stop doing that now and don't don't start again. Example: "We received a letter from the court to cease and desist from shipping our products overseas."

One knows that one could be in legal trouble if one does not follow an order of cease and desist.
