except,except for,beside,besides

except, prep. 除…之外 (不包含该介词的宾语在内)

All the students go to park, except John.  除了约翰以外，所有的学生都去公园了。（约翰没去）

We go to school every day except Sunday.  星期日不上学

We all passed the exam except Tom. 我们都通过了考试，汤姆除外。（整体中……汤姆一人不及格）

Everyone is here except Tom.  除了Tom每个人都来了。

except后接名词、代词、动名词和原形动词，这时except=but；但except后跟副词、介词短语时，不能用but代替。

He did nothing except/ but clean the house.他只是打扫了房子。

The window is never open except in summer.这扇窗户从来不开,除夏季外。

beside 意指“在...旁边”

Come and sit beside us. 过来坐在我们旁边吧。

There is a chair beside the door. 门旁边有一把椅子。
