Have you ever lied before? I think the answer is yes. In fact, men lie six times and women lie three times in a day on average. (dailymail.co.uk). Shocking, isn’t it? We always put “lying” in the black list and people never thought they would lie that much. Our parents teach us not to lie ever since an infant. We get punished when we lie, and sometimes there are severe consequences due to various kinds of dishonesty. Indeed, lying does not benefit this society. I believe that lying is harmful since it’s mentally and physically unhealthy and it destroys the trust between people. However, lying is sometimes the right choice to make in a few circumstances.
Believe it or not, lying is physically and mentally unhealthy. When you tell a lie, your brain can be highly intense. You will be afraid that people might discover your lie, and then you have to make up more lies to cover the previous one. Along with this. You have to consider how believable your lie is and give a convincing performance in order to get people to trust you. Research shows, that by being honest. You will receive improvement in your relationships, less trouble sleeping, less tension, fewer headaches and fewer sore throats. (lifehacker.com). As you can see, lying does affect your body both mentally and physically. These influences will become more obvious as time passes.
Lying destroys the trust between people. When I was small, I used to tell lies a lot. Usually out of fear and the outcomes if I tell the truth. It was five years ago, I was in grade three. I scored 70 on my math test and I was too afraid to tell my parents about it. So I told then that our teachers haven’t finished grading yet. It was fairly easy to say that I was lying since our teacher always gives us our tests back in 2 days. So three days in a roll, I went home and went straight back to my room, avoiding any talk about school so they won’t find out about it. 5 days later my father got really suspicious and phoned our teacher. He found out everything. It was a long time since he trusted me with test scores. Even small lies like this can destroy trust between family members, then what about the other lies?
As I have said before, lying is undoubtedly bad. However, in a few circumstances, lying becomes the right thing to do. For example, your mother bought a new dress. She stands in front of the dressing mirror and she feels great. Suddenly you come home from school. She embraces you and asks whether she looks fat in that dress. She does look fat in that, but will you tell her the truth, or will you say that she looks nice? I believe the majority of us will say that she looks nice. These kinds of lies are called “white lies”. They are untruths we tell to minimize harm, embarrassment or distress. (Changingminds.org). White lies are usually acceptable and sometimes encouraged.
Lying is not good as a whole. It damages your body both physically and mentally and it destroys the trust between people. However, under only a few circumstances, being honest is not the smartest thing to do. Humans are complex animals, and we should be able to make complicated decisions. Telling a lie and telling the truth can have major differences sometimes. Make clever decisions, and “think twice before you lie”.
