Unforgettable experience

For me, being a social volunteer during the 2008 Paralympics Games is the most unforgettable experience I have had since I am born.

In my eyes, the chance of my experiencing another Olympic Games held in China in the rest of my life will be slim, so I feel honored and excited to make myself a part of this grand activity, and contribute my share to it. Additionally, I feel lucky to have a close look at such a grand event and appreciate unique Olympic atmosphere here.

Although I, having no chance to give service to the athletes, was mainly engaged in providing information for passengers, assisting passengers in buying tickets from automatic tickets-selling machine and helping subway station staffs in coordinating orders, I still believe that I obtain a lot from this experience.

First and foremost, I have a better understanding of the spirit of volunteers, that is, sacrificing themselves, assisting others, maintaining harmonious relations among people. In additionDuring this experienceI practicing this with enthusiasm.

Second, I have experienced many moved moments in this 20 days’ volunteering work, not only from passengers, but also from my team members. When I told the routine information to passengers, some of them will give me a appraising smile; some of them a satisfied nodding; some of them a thanking word, which convey me this message they appreciate what I have done for them and confirm my work. Nothing else can make me feel so fulfilled by their appreciation. There are 11 members in our group; owing to their trust, I was worked as a deputy team leader. I was very touched by their trust to me, the youngest and inexperienced member in the team and by their cooperation to my work. What’s more, the two boys, working with me in the same station, are too considerable to make me work more relaxing and comfortable. For there are only two seats reserved for us to give our consultancy, we have to take turns in standing duty; however, no matter how much I insisted in joining in the turns, they remained a permanent seats for me. Everyday when we finished work and returned to school by bus, they will occupy me a seat or give theirs to me. They never left me alone eating in the working place of the station staffs, and would wait for me even if they had already finished their lunch, in order not to make me uncomfortable with strangers. After the work, they would talk with me and gave me suggestions for my study.

ThirdI have gained many things I can not learn from the book. In order to give more exact and detailed information to the passengers, we downloaded many materials from the Internet and categorize them. At that time, basically, I can give an instant answer to 95% people’s question. And from this, I know that I “fight no battle unprepared”, that is to say, no matter what I am going to do, I must have a good knowledge about the work and have a good preparation for it. Additionally, politeness shall be put in the first place when we communicate with people. I remember everytime when somebody came over, we must instantly said to him\her “what can I do for you?” If we had the passengers waiting for answer, we should say “I’m sorry, thank you for your waiting”, and say “You’re welcome” when win the thanking word. Also, smiling is the vital point of the whole process. What’s more, perseverance is needed. You know, we had to sit there for 20days, 5hours a day, doing the same thing. We have no chance to see the athletes, the stadium and the games. We had to stay at the station watching the flowing crowds. We had to endure the noise in the station. So this experience teaches me the importance of perseverance.

Finally, I made many friends during this work period, and they gave me a lot help, especially, Y, Z, YX and L. They helped me better accustomed to the volunteering work, gave me suggestions about my study and my future plans, and taught me many computer skills. When I was upset, they would have a walk with me, watch films with me, and talk with me. When I was happy, they would also share these moments with me. Although they all have graduated and started their own career in other places, we can have a good contact with each other. Good luck to their careers and their lives!

I write this article to record my 20days’ meaningful volunteering work and renew happy memories. Also I want to passionate my life.
