The Godfather

The Godfather is a successful trilogy, which was first shown in1972. This film is produced by Albert Ruddy and adapted from the novel of the same title The God Father written by Mario Puzo. The film describes frustrating and successful experiences of a mafia family to reveal the unscrupulousness and decay in the mafia world and even the corruption of the government.
Corleone family was one of five mafia families in New York. It controlled politics, finance and almost every field of business by some methods. The head of the family Don Vito Corleone, also called Godfather had three sons: the foolhardy eldest son Sonny, the right hand of him, the cowardly elder son Fred and the youngest son Michael who was smart but had no interest in the family’s business. Vito also had a foster son Tom, who is the consultant of Corleone family. Although Vito had done many illegal things he was unwilling to have any relation with drug. So he refused drug trafficker Sollozzo’s request of inviting him to do the drug business. However, Vito’s refusing sharpened the conflict with other mafia families. In order to get Vito’s agreement, Sollozzo kidnapped Tom and assassinated Vito. Vito was badly injured and sent to the hospital. Then Sonny took over the family and began to revenge for his father. At the same time Michael found the sheriff was bribed by Sollozzo, so for his father’s sake, he shot the sheriff and Sollozzo. Therefore, Michael had to escape to Sicily. He got married there. Vito had recovered. However, as the conflict between mafia families become more intensive, Sonny was killed and also Michael lost his wife. To appease the conflict and guarantee Michael’s safe return, Vito negotiated with other heads of those mafia families. Therefore, Michael came back safely and married to his ex-girlfriend. As Vito became weaker, Michael took over the business of family. When Vito died, Michael began his revenge plan. He killed all betrayers and enemies. Finally Michael won the respect among his families and became the new Godfather.
Godfather reveals a lot about the American society at that time. We can learn about the life of Italian immigrants in America, and further see the situation of other different immigrants. This film focuses the life of the Italian mafia family. Maybe, those Italians are not black gangs in their own country. When they come to America, this foreign country, they eagerly want to succeed and gain the legal status in America. However, as a common sense, living in an alien country is difficult. The immigrants are easily excluded by the native people. They are few opportunities to be really successful. Therefore, the irony is that they have to reach the legal position in the way of doing some illegal things. For instance, when America proclaimed the prohibition, many Italians enrich themselves by smuggling wine. However, the policy changed after World War Ⅱ. In order to develop economy America encouraged people to immigrate. Consequently, the amount of immigrants from different races and countries increased dramatically. As we know, now immigrants have been a big proportion of American population. With diverse cultures enter into America, the natives concern that their own culture will be lost. Therefore, many law articles are enacted to limit the amount of immigrant. Despite that, America has inevitably become a salad, where different racial people live together, different cultures conflict and integrate.
