Spring storms often come through Arkansas in late winter and especially in spring! In 2008 we had a major tornado nearby that destroyed more than 200 homes. This year? Who knows?
  • O'Bright: So strange weather in recent years. (3-6 12:27)
  • sedgehead: Arkansas has always had many tornados. I remember several when I was a boy in the 1960s. (3-6 13:13)

Spring! The topic for March. But first a bear story. About two years ago I was walking alone in the woods in Arkansas. I was alone. I saw a black bear and two cubs nearby. They saw me and ran away!
  • yaping: Spring is coming!! (3-7 20:38)
  • Muyin: danger? (3-11 01:28)
  • sedgehead: Yes, it is very dangerous to find a mother bear. If she feels threatened, she will attack you! (3-11 12:09)

The Ozark Mountain region is a beautiful area with flat hill tops, steep sided hills, and deep valleys with clean water streams and many springs. In some areas, like my hometown, there are many caves.
  • wangxiaoqinqq: aha,I also like climbing mountain, enjoy yourself in the natural beauty (2-28 10:45)
  • Tracy1987: try to explore the caves? (2-28 21:25)
  • sedgehead: I love to go caving. I have found many caves in the woods. One time I found a dead bear in a cave. We named it Dead Bear Cave. I'm glad it was not a live bear when we found it! (3-1 11:23)
  • Tracy1987: oh...a live baby bear will be fantastic, maybe you have a chance to make friends with him.But a little dangerous (3-1 20:04)
  • sedgehead: Today, I will write a short note about a live bear I saw in the woods. (3-2 09:52)

Aside from the Ozark and Ouachita mountains, Arkansas has two other physiographic regions, the Mississippi River Alluvial Plain and the West Gulf Coastal Plain.

Arkansas has a second area of mountains. They are called the Ouachita Mountains. The tops of the Ouachitas are not flat like the Ozark Plateau. The Ouachitas are folded mountains like a wrinkle.

I live in the Ozark Mountain region of Arkansas. This area is an old plateau that was raised above the sea long ago. It has been washed out and now has many rolling hills. It is a very rocky area.

Today Arkansas is a slowly growing state. We have four different areas: the flat crop lands in the east, the Ozark mountains in the north and west, the Ouachita mountains, and one other. Later!

After the US Civil War Arkansas was a very poor state. We are still a poor state, with poor schools, poor roads, etc. But during my lifetime, things have improved dramatically. Tomorrow? More info!
  • EmmaYred: ..Nowadays,a poor area doesn't mean poor vitality .....just something is difficult to change.............I have no idea that my reading is right....heh (2-13 01:02)
  • sedgehead: You are correct and your English is good. I'd just say one period (.) is plenty! (2-13 09:09)

Arkansas left the United States in 1861 and become part of the Southern War for Independence (US Civil War). Terror reigned and no one controlled the government near my home. The CSA lost; USA won.

A Short History of Arkansas: 1819 Arkansas territory established (includes today's Oklahoma); became a US state in 1936.

Arkansas is northwest of Texas, east of Oklahoma, west of Missiouri, and northeast of Mississippi. When the US bought the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, Arkansas was part of that land they bought.

I have lived in Arkansas several times, 1964, 1965-1966, 1967-1968, 1969-1975, 1985-1993, and 2008-present. Arkansas is south of Missouri and north of Louisiana.
  • epkings: pH,I have a question(it is not abou ur miniblog):what do u say "红包(red pager containing money as a gift)" (2-9 10:19)
  • sedgehead: My Chinese friends call it "Red envelopes." I often see them say that in English. Americans don't use this method, so we don't have a unique phrase for it. (2-9 21:50)
  • sedgehead: If Americans talk about 红包 we would probably be descriptive. Example: Chinese people give their children red envelopes filled with money for gifts on the Chinese New Years Day. (2-9 21:52)
  • epkings: Thank you very much, pH! (2-10 10:52)
