Death of a femal white collar

Hot 3970 views. 2014-3-1 09:58 | reported, minutes, station, nobody, subway

A femal white collar died at a subway station. She was reported that she got faint and felt on the ground and was dying and struggling to head up for a while. About fifty minutes later, she died with nobody's help. During that period, about seven people passed by her, mostly they merely observed it in a short time and left again.
The news said she was a project manager from IBM Shenzhen branch. At present there is no further news about the reason of death. It might be overwork death. It is a common phenomenon can be heard of in many cases.
And such a case happened again, and noboy else was willing to do a favour. In fifty minutes, she definitly had the chance of being rescued. If she got the first aid, she probably would have been rescued. Though most people worried of being involved in some troubles, one of them is likely to be asked to compensate by the rescued man's family, which bothers people to make a decision whether he or she shall give a hand when it comes to this kind of situation. It is really hard to make that will to help out.
Apart from pedestrians, where were those station's staff?  They are supposed to be more professional about disposing of that.
The result was neither passengers nor the staff made an emergency call.

Oh my god, so depressing. Since when have people turned so cold and unsympathetic? I understand that people are affected by the news of people making malicious claims against people who offered help, but not everyone is like that and we should learn how to differentiate.

Indeed, if someone offered help, she may have survived. A life lost just like that. It is actually the fault of the authorities. They should beat down those people who make unreasonable claims from people who help them. Furthermore, it is the duty of the government to provide emergency attend to emergency assistance and must respond quickly when they receive information of people in distress.

In my city Hong Kong, you could be arrested for negligence when someone ignores people who desperately need help. In this case, the station staff would certainly be in trouble.

Everyone could be in an emergency any time and need help. People minds must change to be more helpful and there must be consequences for complacent and heartless people.

While in the mainland, such cases happen at times and there is likely to be a piece of common news and and gone away in public, nobody else is willing to talk of it again. The next tragedy news will be an ingredient for gossip again.

I find Hong Kong a weird place to live. There is hardly any interpersonal connections made between neighbours or even people you meet everyday. I find it a cold city at first, hardly any deep bonds between close friends, all you realise is they're one of your friends, nothing more. There are too many connections and people, who are bonded on personal benefit. But then, when there's a need of help for strangers, no matter on the street, on the mtr, anywhere, Hong Kong people would definitely offer their hands to aid those in need. I don't know what to say of this. Do you reckon friendships in China are more easily created?

In psychology there is something called the bystander effect. It is defined as the social phenomenon that individuals are less likely to offer any means of help in the presence of others. There is too many studies done on this. Levine et al. (2001) also investigated cross-cultural differences in helping behaviour, one of his conclusions is cities with higher purchasing power has lower helping rates. It is a universal phenomenon, happening all over the world, it is something that humans do.
Nevertheless, there are too many sad cases in China of the same phenomenon. It is hardly bearable to see the lose of lives still so easily in the modern society, just like the Kunming Train Station massacre. It is essentially the flaw of the educational system, and what we have to do is just make sure when we confront the same situations, we would offer our hands with no second thought.

I think the accident reflect some people's attitude about the society. Supposed someone could offer help to the woman, it might saved her life. It was really a tragedy for the whole family of this woman.

You are really well informed and observant. What you said is 100% the truth about Hong Kong. People here are extremely stressed. Due to the fact that there are lots of money making opportunities, people care about nothing except money. Whenever friends gather, the talk would be about money and their own achievements. Friends are valued according to their financial and social status. True friendship is rare.

As for why people are so cold and yet they are ready to offer help in public is because of the 'hero' image. Everyone wants to be the hero and a nice guy. However, when nobody is watching, they could refuse to help even the desperate victims. Fortunately, during the past few years, things have  changed. People realize that there is no point for all this madness and gradually, people are becoming more soft and humane here.

You my not believe it, but I can tell you for sure that visitors from the mainland actually helped Hong Kong people see themselves and HK people become more civilized and calm down. HK people have far exaggerated the bad behavior of some mainland tourists while not complimenting the majority who are well behaved. HK people believe they are above the mainland people while it is not true. Those who live in HK would know these facts.

Actually, I am really worried if the mainland tourists stop coming to HK because they are really helping HK survive because HK have no industry and sustainable income. This is actually a shopping city. The so called financial center status of HK is not that strong and could be easily overtaken by other cities.

To those HK people who are reading this, as the Chinese saying goes; 'When you drink water, think about the source'. Be grateful. I am a truly HK born person and I am writing this from HK.

Since evil is not the nature of humans, I believe they would change their complacent attitude. Have hope. Give it some time.
