Can borrowing money from a friend harm the friendship?

756 views. 2011-9-5 22:52

Although debtor-creditor relationship may make friendship more complicated, it is rather arbitrary to simply say that borrowing money from friends can damage the friendship.

Indeed, when it related to money, friendship may not as simple as it once was. For example, the one who borrowed money may always feel he/she owned his/her friend and may feel the friendship is no longer equal. What's more, they may be stressful and become more fragile and more sensitive. In this situation, some previously normal jokes between friends may be taken seriously, therefore mistakes arose. On the other hand, it is not easy for the one who lend money to a friend as well. Sometimes the debtor may forget to pay back because of some reasons. If the debtor is not the creditor’s friend, he/she can naturally urge the debtor to pay back money. However, in most cases, it is not easy to press a friend to pay back money. That is to say, the monetary relationship do may make friendship more complicated than before.

However, whether the debt can damage the friendship depends on the prestige and quality of the friends rather than on the debt itself. For instance, if the friend who borrowed the money just feels grateful but not feels inferior, then the unnecessary pressure and mistakes can be avoided. As to the friend who lent the money, he/she should not be shy to remind the friend to pay back money. True friends may feel embarrassed but not be angry when they forget to pay back and be reminded. If they are upset when be reminded about the debt, they might want to default on purpose. That is not a true friends should do. To this point, borrowing money from a friend can test the friendship between them. As the old saying goes, a friend in need is a friend indeed.

Everyone may come across some hard time. A very important component in friendship is assistance. That's what fiends for. And after the difficult period, the debtor should pay back the money on time. In this situation, borrowing money from friends may not damage the friendship but enhance it.

To sum up, simply to say that borrowing money from a friend can harm the friendship is rather rash. True friendship cannot be damaged by debt, but can be improved.
